Dedicated to
Dr. Henrietta C. Mears, a gifted Bible teacher whose book What the Bible Is All About has helped millions of adults to see the big picturehow everything from Genesis to Revelation all fits together.
This special version is written to help children and young people discover for themselves what the Bible is all about.
Foreword
You may be buying this book for a friend or for yourself. In any case, you know that the Bible is an exciting book. As we study the Bible, it is easy to become so involved in the details of each event or chapter that we lose sight of the big picture. This book will help you see the big picture how everything in the Bible all fits together.
You will see that throughout the entire Bible God has a plan
a plan for the nation of Israel,
a plan for providing the world with forgiveness and eternal life,
a plan for YOU!
This book will also help you understand the events that happened in the Bible. The time lines tell WHEN events happened, and the maps show WHERE it all happened.
It will all come to life for you as you discover the meanings of Bible words and customsand as you read what archaeologists have discovered by digging in Bible lands. The charts and diagrams help to tie together how things relate to each other.
This is a book youll use over and over again as you study Gods Word. It will help you understand not only what happened in Bible times, but also how to apply it to your own life.
My wife, Ruth, and I were glad to recommend the first edition of this book and I believe this updated version will be a blessing to you, whether for personal Bible study, family devotions or group study.

Now were talking about the New Testament part of the Bible.
Heres a picture of what Gods Big Story looks like:
Who Wrote this Story?
Over many hundreds of years God used many different writers to produce His big story! The writers were different ages and had different backgrounds, but what they all wrote carried the same wonderful message about one personGods only Son, Jesus.
What are some names you have heard people call the Bible? Do you know what those names mean?
- Bible (book)
- Scripture (writings)
- Gods Word (Gods message to us)
- Holy Bible (special book)
- The Gospel (good news)
- The Law (Gods rules and teaching)
The word Bible is from the Greek word that simply means book, but the Bible is no ordinary book. Thats why most Bibles have the word Holy (special or chosen by God) in the title.
How Many Books Are in the Bible?
When you hold a Bible in your hands and look through its pages (or check out the contents page in the front), you see that the Bible is a collection of 66 booksa library!
A Library with Two Sections
There are 39 books in the first section. This section makes up about three-fourths of the whole library. Its called the Old Testament.
There are 27 books in the second section. This part makes up the last fourth of the library. Its called the New Testament.
A Library Thats Easy to Use
Besides having only two parts, this library of books in the Bible is easy to use.
So that you can quickly find your way around, nearly all of the books are divided into chapters; and all of the chapters are divided into verses.
To find something in the Bible, all you have to do is look up its referencejust like you look up an address! For example, the reference Genesis 1:1 means look in the book of Genesis, chapter 1 (thats the big number on the page in the Bible), verse 1 (thats the small number on the page in the Bible). Its that easy!
Part One: Old Testament
Think promisethe word testament means a promise. The entire Old Testament is the story of the parts of a wonderful
