To the Memory of Hans M. Barstad (19472020) colleague, friend, and fellow-traveller on the path of history

During a lunch in a restaurant not far away from the Theologicum of the Humboldt Universitt, Markus Witte suggested the idea that I could publish a set of articles on the history of and the religion in ancient Israel in the series Beihefte zur Zeitschrift fr die Alttestamentliche Wissenschaft. My mind was at that time focused on the finalization of my monograph on the context of the Yehudite community in Persian period Elephantine, so I may not have reacted with much enthusiasm. But returning to the proposal back home, I started thinking more and more positively about the idea, leading to the present volume. I would like to thank Markus Witte for his initiative. The editorial board of BZAW kindly accepted my proposal.

Dr Sophie Wagenhofer and Aaron Sanborn-Overby from Verlagshaus Walter de Gruyter have been very supportive in turning my word-files into a real book, a process of bewildering magic in the eyes of a scholar.

The various publishing companies kindly gave their permission to reproduce my articles in this volume. Special thanks go to Peeters Publisher in Leuven for the permission to reprint chapter 3. The editorial board of the Journal of North-West Semitic Languages wholeheartedly approved my request to include chapter 6 in this volume. I did not alter the text of my publications, except for a few spelling errors and typos. Publications that were announced as in Press have now received their full bibliographical antecedents. In some instances, I have albeit scarcely added in brackets important publications and editions of ancient Near Eastern texts.
