Introduction

This volume contains the papers presented at the 2017 meeting of the SBL Program Unit on Deuterocanonical and Cognate Literature in Boston, MA. The theme of the sessions was the interpretation of Torah in deuterocanonical literature. Whereas some contributions focused on the concept of Torah, law, or the figures that embody the law, or stood for the application of the law, others took themes or topics from the first five books, such as testing, fearing the lord, emotions, etc. All contributions, however, attempted to trace a concept or theme through the Hebrew Bible, into the Septuagintal deuterocanonical books and other relevant and cognate literature.
The collection of contributions in this volume starts with the question how Abrahams obedience to God is received in Second Temple sources. After first noting that one can of course not yet talk about pentateuchal law Abraham precedes narratively the Sinai events Mark Mariani argues that rather soon an interpretive tradition emerged, motivated by Genesis 26:35 that started seeing Abraham in line with legal language from Deuteronomy. Next, Mariani continues and explores how the theme of Abrahams Torah obedience is further developed in Philos De Abrahamo, Jubilees, the Damascus Covenant, and in Sirach, leaving not one understanding of Abraham but three in Second Temple Judaism.
Testing is one of the themes that is dealt with in the Book of Exodus with the short passage about the Waters of Massah and Meribah in Exodus 17:17 playing a most prominent role. Not only is this passage open to multiple interpretations, but it also has been interpreted beyond the Hebrew Bible, such as in the Septuagint, the Book of Judith and in Josephuss Antiquitates. Jan Willen van Henten and Silvia Castelli set out to trace the history of this important theme in the said literature, in which three main players take a leading role: the Israelites, God and Levi-Moses. In the contribution the question whether Moses was also tested by God and what sort of Levi undergoes is answered.
