A no-nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is guide to pursuing a successful military career from a Senior Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force (Midwest Book Review).
A.J. Kehls well-crafted guide is designed with one purpose in mind: To make sure you make the most out of your time in the armed forces. Sgt. Kehl distinguishes his book from any other you will read, pointing out all the important things that rarely, if ever, make it to print. Hot items such as promotion, leadership, networking, and traveling make this a must-read for anyone now on active duty, thinking of joining the military, or who has spent time within this unique lifestyle.
My Rich Uncle includes an invaluable collection of knowledge, wisdom, and insight from numerous USAF leaders, all of which is geared toward helping fellow airmen find success in their careers by highlighting the cultural things we expect airmen to know, or at least figure out, but which are rarely taught. This book will help you successfully navigate an Air Force career by providing insight into the expectations and the steps for YOU to take in order to maximize your service time and set yourself up for success. It also highlights little known programs, like Air Force Lean and Continuous Process Improvement, that empower airmen to find root cause solutions and reduce time-wasting practices that do not further your career.
My Rich Uncle: An Informal Guide to Maximizing Your Enlistment is written by an airman for men and women who want to get the most out of their service.
This is a military guide like no other! J. Lewis, Command CMSgt (Ret.)

Preface
The hard part is over.
You spent a few of your hard-earned dollars and took a chance on a book by some guy with a MacBook and a desire to share valuable information. Well, I thank you and Im confident it will be money well spent. I render this as true because I spent months gathering thoughts and ideas from many of the worlds most knowledgeable enlisted members. Countless hours have been spent preparing this hodgepodge of a guide. In the end, a manual of sorts has been established.
My Rich Uncle is not about taking for granted the immense benefits the military offers or about finding loopholes that breach character, but rather it is about maximizing the services offered and reaping the often intangible rewards of this chapter in your life. This book is written so anyone can pick it up and take something away. Whether you are thinking of joining, youre already a member, or youre a veteran looking for more information to bestow upon the younger generation, My Rich Uncle is for you.
We begin with, well, the beginning. The journey ahead is interesting to say the least. Life-altering events, one after another, lead you to build a network around yourself. This community spreads like wildfire across the globe and has an enormous return on investment. Moving forward, youll learn ways to effectively survive the new universe around you. Your personal and professional lives will never be the same, and managing your enlisted life is paramount. I will guide you through all the variables that will inevitably come your way so you can develop daily, breeding success.
Becoming whole and finding yourself is the greatest benefit of the military, but there are thousands of other reasons why this life, the military life, is abound with benefits and advantages that common civilians will never experience. You will quickly see that as your life moves forward, learning, adapting, and traveling. Those you grew up with (at least the majority of them) will be seemingly standing still as time passes them by. Youll eagerly go home to visit friends and family only to find they are still bagging groceries at the local Albertsons or still working for their dad at the towns only auto shop. This isnt a bad thing by any means, but your eyes will widen as you realize what you are doing is important and unique. How unique? Well, so unique that only 1 percent of Americans embark on this journey. I would say that is pretty unique!
As of this writing, I have been in the military for a little over 15 years. In that time, I have been to 67 countries, held ten different duty titles, been a part of four wartime deployments, and met extraordinary people who have shaped who I am as a person and given me opportunities I would have never been fortunate to have had I not joined the Air Force.
These experiences and gathering of knowledge are laid out throughout this book with special highlights called MRU Tips just for you. Of course, MRU stands for My Rich Uncle. These tips can range from enlisted life advice to tips on maximizing your Government Travel Charge Card benefits.
The Air Force is a true blessing, and for those of you who are thinking of joining, you wont regret it. Even if you only stay long enough to get out of moms house, it will be worth your investment of time. If you are currently serving and picked up this book out of curiosity, use it however you like. Pull random things out that can lift you higher in your pursuit of enlisted success. I tried to keep it as real as possible and hope you appreciate that as you flip through the content. Finally, for those of you who have served in the past and found your way to this collection of craziness, I hope you find some nostalgic moments and the words bring back old memories. If you havent already, you will see that the Air Force has probably changed since your day. One day I will be in your shoes, reading the Air Force Times , asking myself why the military keeps changing when things were so awesome in my day. Who knows? All I know is this book is written for everyone, and if you are able to get even one thing out of it, it is all worth it.
If you are looking for a book that reads like the well-written articles by your installation PA office, you picked up the wrong book. This wont have sections on core values, manpower and organization, or customs and courtesies. These things are implied and not my intent. Instead, you have your mitts on something I wish was handed to me as a young senior airman. Something raw and real that can be swiftly applied to get to the next level. But this isnt an airmans guide. It is a collection of thoughts, ideas, and solutions. If you read it and apply some of these tips to your enlisted life, I believe you will be on your way to cooking up success. With all that said, there are also some things in here I dont back 100 percent. In a later chapter, I speak about outsourcing and what you can do. Although that is awesome, I am not recommending it, just letting you know it exists. Take what you wish. Brain dump what you think is not value added. Im just grateful for the opportunity to write this book and hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
AJ Kehl
