The publisher, editor and author are grateful for permission to reprint from U. Streit, Analysing spatial data by stochastic methods, in G. Bahrenberg and U. Streit, German Quantitative Geography, Mnstersche Geographische Arbeiten Bd. 11, Ferdinand Schoningh, Paderbon, 1981.
A healthy discipline is one which subjects itself to continual, constructive criticism, involving all its adherents in debates about its goals and procedures. For much of the time that process of appraisal will be low-key and relatively uncontroversial; occasionally, however, it may involve major debates about the subject, or at least with disciplines as broad as geography some parts of it. This seems to be the case at the present time for geography in the English-speaking world. Debates are pronounced and profound, and the discipline is being subjected to a great deal of internal scrutiny.
This book has been designed to contribute to those debates, but not in the usual ways: it is not a balanced overview of the protagonists' views, nor is it a series of essays designed for the small number of active participants only and written in terms and contexts that only a few will appreciate. Its goal, rather, is to broaden the debating base by involving students. The essays have been written as a set of forthright personal statements, aimed specifically at an undergraduate audience; an interest in geography and its subject matter is assumed, but there are no prerequisite readings on philosophical or methodological issues. The book is avowedly introductory, to stimulate appreciation of the major issues currently confronting today's geographers by those who will form tomorrow's.
The book makes no claim to be comprehensive. Its structure, the topics covered and the authors selected reflect editorial predilections, whereas the details of each chapter reflect individual views of the issues and interpretations of the brief. The aim is to provide insights into current concerns about the future of geography.
I am grateful to the contributors for agreeing to participate in this venture and for keeping to the timetable, and to Mary Ann Kernan for her enthusiastic support.
