Foreword
I grew up in a reading home. My mom, as moms will do, had a huge influence on me. Mom was a regular reader, and our house was constantly filled with books on a wide variety of topics. My mother influenced me to start reading when I was five years old. She would tape Scriptures to the wall for us to memorize. In our house, we had the Bibleand we had books about the Bible. Thats what I read. Then we got a set of the World Book Encyclopedia, and I read every volume.
That love of reading Mom inspired has only grown over the years. It may sound strange to some of you that a man whos made his living in the world of professional sports would be an avid reader, but today my love of reading is a secret to no one. In fact, Im pretty well known for putting appropriate books in the hands of all my NBA players. Im a strong believer in reading, and, whenever I can, I am front and center on the importance of reading. Im glad to have had a part in improving the lives of those under my leadership.
When my friend Pat Williams told me he was working on a book about reading, I was excited! And then I thought, Pat, whos going to read a book about reading? People who dont readare they going to read it? And people who do readwhy would they read it?
But as I read through the manuscript, I really changed my mind. I had never considered all the benefits of readinglike the fact that its a safeguard against old age, or that it makes you the most interesting person at the dinner table. Reading makes your mind sharp, alive, vibrant. It keeps you on the cutting edge. Like a healthy body, a healthy mind is honed like a razor. And its reading that does thatnothing else! Not television, not movies, not playing golfnot even shooting hoops. This book will inspire you to view reading as one of the essentials of your lifewhich it islike eating, sleeping, and exercising. It is not an option.
Ive often expressed my belief that teamwork is the art of selflessness. Reading appears to be an act of self-satisfaction, but ultimately it is a selfless endeavor. When we read, we become more interesting people. We become team players in the game of life, people with whom others want to engage. Books fill our minds with ideas and information we can pass on to others. When we read, we become excited about reading, and we cant wait to share our current favorite or just get others excited about reading, too.
I have a practical rule for my teams: when the ball comes into your hands and you hold it for longer than two counts, youve destroyed the teams rhythm. When you hold the ball, all eyes are on you. And when
