Preface to This Edition
The response to this book after its first printing some twelve years ago showed that the issue most in need of clarification was what I call the theology of disclosure, the method followed by the book. The theology of disclosure is a speculative form of theological reflection inspired by phenomenology. One could call it "phenomenological theology," but this term is clumsy in English.
Phenomenology reflects on the appearance of things, but it takes such appearances as generally valid and true, as manifestations of the things presented in them. It does not begin, as so much modern thinking does, with a skeptical bias against appearances. Phenomenology then describes the appearances that are proper to various kinds of things: perceived material objects, other persons, the past and future, pictures, written words. Each kind of thing, each "region of being," as Husserl calls it, has its own manner of being disclosed. Phenomenology tries to bring out the various structures of appearance and the necessities that are found in them.
The theology of disclosure, correspondingly, tries to bring out the structure of manifestation that is proper to Christian "things," and most centrally it tries to bring out the structure of disclosure proper to the Christian God, the God of faith and reason. This God, who reveals himself as the hidden God, is presented by being distinguished from the divinities that have been recognized, and continue to assert themselves, in the pagan" world. The biblical, and specifically the Christian,

God is presented in contrast with whatever is thought or revered as ultimate within the world of natural experience. These "gods" are shown to be false gods once the Word of God has been spoken to us.
