Why did I write this book?

I know very well how a musician feels who has dedicated all of his or her life since childhood to master an instrument. All these efforts to finally find a small professional world that allows little room for growth and development and where innovation is feared and little value placed on innovation.

I have been there. I know that the first step to getting out of this vicious circle is to recognize and understand your Artistic DNA. Its the best way to push aside the leaves in order to see the tree or maybe even the entire forest full of infinite possibilities!

There is a vitality, a life-force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost. The world will not have it.

--Martha Graham, choreographer

Introduction to the Method

What Is Artistic DNA?

Desire is the starting point of all achievement, not a hope, not a wish, but a keen pulsating desire, which transcends everything.

- Napoleon Hill , Think and Grow Rich.

There exists a powerful force, a source of energy that never ends, available to everyone and even more, its completely free. Can you guess what it is?

Even though the most evident response would be the sun, you refer to a force that is much more useful and powerful, an energy that does not distinguish between social classes or cultures of any kind. It is a power that emanates from within ourselves, one in which you all possess, but few of us actually use to its full potential.

This force some people call passion, desire, hope or life mission. Regardless of what one calls it, it injects us with courage, it pushes us to do things that before you thought were unimaginable, and even though it is free and accessible to everyone, not everyone knows it exists (or if they do know it, they do not know how to take advantage of it to the maximum).

In our day-to-day routines, especially in our artistic careers, you sometimes feel disoriented. You do not know why you do what you do and what it is that you love. Automatically, you waste your energy and ability to advance. You are less effective in continuing our own projects, and you lose time and invest our talent in an erroneous place. Without realizing it, you end up proceeding in a way that easily leads us to feel a certain frustration.

It could be that you have moved beyond the emotion of frustration and feeling stuck and began to think to oneself how can I:

  • Play more concerts?
  • Have a larger audience?
  • Feel a sense of purpose in what I do?
  • Know in which direction I have to go to further my career?
  • Increase my income?
  • Obtain more recognition?

These are questions that bedevil us when you want to advance our project, whichever that might be. It does not matter if you are trying to build a career as a solo artist, form a chamber music ensemble or orchestra, organize concerts, or create festivals. All of these projects should have a fundamental and well-profiled element: its mission .

Without defining a mission, it will be difficult for you to succeed and continue your performances and refine them over time. Even more, it is impossible without a mission to make your project grow and develop in the way you want simply because you do not know where you want to go.

Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?

"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," responded the Cheshire cat.

"I don't care where."

Then it doesn't much matter which way you go."

- Lewis Carroll , Alice in Wonderland

In my consulting sessions, you always confront these questions. I have arrived at the firm conclusion that the most effective way to escape this vague situation and clearly visualize where you want to go is to return to your origins, your roots. In other words, identifying what makes us passionate and defining why it is worth it to do what you do: our mission .

Using the method you are about to discover, I have been able to help many musicians and organizations create the project that they wish. Now, I can make this method available to the entire music community. I would like for all of you to benefit from this tool to accomplish effectively your projects so that the world finally knows and enjoys your music and performances.

The Method

There exists many methods to help define your identity. Some define the values like mission and vision . Other systems, called UVP (Unique Value Proposition), look to define which values make you unique. The problem is that all of these methods are centered on the definition of companies and institutions and do not work well for artists. For this reason, I wanted to create the artistic DNA method, taking the best of all the methods that already exist and adapting them to the language and reality of the world of music.

With artistic DNA , I want all musicians to feel comfortable and benefitted, providing a simple and powerful process that understands the reality and nature of being a musician: a system that understands what it means to offer a musical experience.

When I used to play the violin and tried to build a career with my string quartet, I would have loved to be able to have an artistic DNA . Without a doubt, it would have saved us a lot of work, sweat, and suffering. With an artistic DNA, we would have had alternatives to things that did not work well and given us a clear, global vision of where our project should go.

I know perfectly well how it feels for a musician who has dedicated himself since childhood to mastering an instrument, someone who finishes their higher education and find themselves in an apparently small, professional world with very little margin for growth and development. This is a world where most of the time the fear of innovation predominates instead of the value of something new.

I have been there, and I know that making use of your artistic DNA is the best way to take the first step in escaping the negative loop of confusion and frustration. It is the best way to trim the leaves that dont let you see the trees and the forest that are full of infinite possibilities!

In the next chapters, you will find the necessary tools to find what moves you and why . These tools also allow you to know if what you have to offer is interesting for the public, making sure that your project is of certain viability, even before you start to develop it!

This method involving artistic DNA is going to help you clarify:

  • Why you do what you do.
  • What is relevant or interesting about your project.
  • What you need to communicate to your audience.
  • Discover what makes you unique and different from the rest.
  • What is going to allow you to gain visibility.

As a result, this method will help you to:

  • Have a personal guide that will help you indicate what direction you need to take.
  • Know when you have to say, Yes and when you simply have to say, No, thanks.

The method that you have in your hands is the result of all of my real experiences with musicians and organizations. These experiences have allowed me to refine and make this method available to you, so from your house and, without my help, you can describe your artistic DNA easily and effectively.

I want to help you take back the power and the responsibility that you have in order to develop your professional projects so that you can take better decisions that will help you enjoy a fruitful career and a more prosperous life.
