Introduction

Firstly I would like to thank you for downloading my book and supporting Indie Authors such as myself. Secondly, I must congratulate you. Buying this book shows that you are serious about your safety and the safety of those around you.

In the subsequent chapters you will learn exactly what situational awareness is, the history of situational awareness, and a plethora of ways you can hone your situational awareness skills. If you practice the steps outlined in this book you will develop a superhuman ability to observe your surroundings and make detailed assessment about your environment.

So take a deep breathe, relax and lets get started.

What Exactly Is Situational Awareness

At a very basic level situational awareness is simply knowing whats going on around you. Of course it sounds easy in principle but in reality it requires much practice and knowledge. Just knowing what is happening where you are is not enough. You need to be able to take that information and put it into context, before you act accordingly. You have to orient yourself to adapt to each new surrounding you are in.

So in essence:

Observe + Orient = Situational Awareness

Situational Awareness is crucial to identifying threats and potential danger. Remember, In a dangerous situation, being aware of a threat even seconds before everyone else can keep you and your loved ones safe

Its important to note that situational awareness is more than a skill, it is a mindset; a way of life. While it's true that the focus is primarily on developing your situational awareness to prevent or survive a violent attack or imminent threat, the principles involved can also help hone your powers of observation in all areas of your life.

Situational awareness is sometimes also referred to as checking your six or keeping your back to the wall You may have heard these phrases in your favourite action films!

To summarize, situational Awareness is the ability to identify, process, and comprehend information about how to survive in an emergency situation. Simply put, its knowing what is going on around you.

It is dynamic, hard to maintain, and easy to lose.

History Of Situational Awareness

Whilst the term itself is pretty recent and has gained popularity over the past few years, the concept stems from the history of military theory. For instance, it can be recognised in Sun Tzu's The Art of War.

Before being adopted by human factors scientists in the 1990s, the term was first used by United States Air Force (USAF) fighter aircrew. The aircrew that was returning from war in Korea and Vietnam. They identified having good Situational Awareness as the decisive factor in air combat engagementsthe "ace factor. The OODA Loop, which is a large component of SA and will be discussed in depth later in the book, was invented by John Boyd, who was an Airforce Fighter and Military Strategist.

Stages Of Awareness

Most of the human population stumble through life, blissfully unaware and preoccupied with work and or romantic attachments or what to watch on Netflix. In other words they are entirely unaware of the world around them. You only have to step out onto a busy street and see everyone lost in their smartphones or their own thoughts. This is a serious issue . By not paying close (or any) attention to their surroundings, they place themselves in needless jeopardy.

There is a sliding scale of readiness, going from a state of being oblivious and unprepared to a condition of being ready to instantly do lethal violence if forced. You cannot live stuck at either end of this spectrum. What you need to learn how to do is shift up and down this scale of readiness, somewhat like shifting gears in a car, so that you can match your level of awareness with the current requirements of your situation. In a car, you shift gears based on the grade encountered or the speed desired. On the street, you must learn to "shift gears" mentally, to match the threat level encountered.

Coopers Colors

Jeff Cooper was a United States Marine. He invented the modern technique of handgun shooting, and was an expert on the use and history of small arms. According to Cooper, the most important means of surviving a lethal confrontation, is neither the weapon nor the martial skills. The primary tool is the combat mindset, which he discusses in his book,Principles of Personal Defense. Cooper broke down alertness levels into colors of escalating degrees of preparation for the use of deadly force. This color code system is a mental process, not a physical one. Each color represents a persons potential state of awareness and focus.

These color codes help recognize, evaluate, and avoid potential threats. They are used to measure rising threat and make most situations avoidable.

WHITE

In condition white you are relaxed and unaware of what is going on around you. Your heart rate is normal. If you are attacked in condition white, you may very well die, unless your attacker is completely incompetent. This state is usually characterized as "daydreaming" or "preoccupied". People in white walk with their heads down as if watching their own feet. They do not notice the impending danger until it literally has them by the throat.

YELLOW

Yellow is a relaxed state of general alertness. You are alert and aware of your surroundings. Your heart rate is normal. This is the optimal state of awareness. Even though your senses are slightly heightened in Condition Yellow, its also important to stay relaxed. staying relaxed ensures that you maintain an open focus, which allows you to take in more information about whats going on around you. As opposed to when you are stressed or panicked and your focus narrows.

ORANGE

Condition orange is described as a heightened state of alertness with a specific target noted. The difference between Yellow condition and Orange condition is that there is a specific target for your attention. Your radar has picked up a specific alert. You shift your primary focus to determine if there is a threat

Your heart rate is elevated,

Orange means that there is a potential threat that has gotten your attention. This can be almost anything and usually results in nothing, in which case you go back to yellow .

RED

In the situation where the focus of your attention in condition orange does something you find threatening, you will shift to condition red. In Condition Red youve determined that the threat is real and although you may or may not be in the middle of a conflict you are READY TO ACT. Youre mentally prepared to carry out your plan.

How to Use the Color Codes of Awareness

The color codes of awareness are a continuum of your awareness and readiness to defend. The aim is to constantly flow from one color to the next above or below, depending on the situation and environment.

Never be in white. Remember, spend the majority of your time in yellow , even in places where you feel safe, such as at home.
