Christian hope is not a longing or yearning for God to help; it is not waiting for the slim chance that things may get better. Genuine hope is the confidence that God is in your life, now and forever, and that nothing can separate you from his love. Hope is the confident expectation, the sure certainty that what God has promised, he will deliver.

I pray that as you enter into the emotions and experience the truths of these Psalms, you will be filled with hope as I have.

Foreword

__________

When Bob Saffrin asked me to write the Foreword for Psalms, The Sunrise of Hope , my initial thought was, what would I write? I long ago earned a gold medal for being a negative, hopeless, disgruntled individual. Praise be to God, though, he took away that medal of defeat and promised me a heavenly crown of hope that will never fade away or be broken by lifes heartaches. The Good News is God will do that for you too.

I first met Bob when he joined the John 3:16 Marketing Network. I always read the blogs of authors when they join and his blog post that day was about Moses. His simple but evocative writing style drew me into a familiar Bible story that stirred me emotionally and revealed Gods truth at a much deeper level.

Trusting God through trials, believing Gods promises when all hope seems lost, feeling worthless and abandoned traumas like these can leave us feeling shattered and afraid. Can we really have, as Bob describes, indestructible hope, a hope that is never crushed? What could I share with readers that would help them see Gods grace in the midst of sorrow and speak to their hearts in Psalms, The Sunrise of Hope ?

Once I began reading, memories gushed forth of Gods faithfulness in former battles that had threatened to destroy all my hope. Over a cup of coffee at Panera Bread, tears of thankfulness covered my cheeks as I remembered from where God had brought me.

Hope for the Shattered , Psalm 40 He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock. I remembered the day in 1985 when I contemplated ending it all with pills. God spoke to me and reminded me I died for you on the cross.

Hope for the Sleepless, Psalm 3 My husband walked out on me and the next year I cried myself to sleep every night while clutching my Bible I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.

Hope for the Hopeless, Psalm 13 I couldnt conceive and being barren was like a dagger in my hearta curse. Did God even care?

These sorrows and many more are part of the desert wastelands I wandered in for years before Gods Word became real enough to change mefor good. God had to do a lot to fix me and because we have a God who loves us so much, h e wouldnt leave me where I was and if you are a vagabond in the pit of despair of broken dreams, he wont leave you there either.

From time to time, I take a peek at my past, the wretch that I was, lost in a swamp, and remind myself of the good work God has done in me. Fairy tales and Hollywood stories abound about kings but Gods story about the King of Kings is not a fairy tale its real. God is our heavenly father and he has adopted you. God wants to redeem you from hopelessness into a hope-filled child of God he is your kinsman-redeemer, making you his son or daughter.

Let your heart be moved and your mind renewed. The Great Physician wants to do a miraculous surgery on your spirit. God majors on the majors the seemingly impossible, the outlandish hope, the last chance. Dont let the slough of despair keep you from knowing the fullness of Gods joy. Read the Psalms as never before in Psalms, The Sunrise of Hope , and be blessed to tears as I was. You CAN find hope because God loves you TOO MUCH to leave you hopeless.

Introduction

__________

I always carry a Swiss Army Knife when Im backpacking in the Minnesota wilderness. Its so much more than a pocketknife; its a multi-tool and is useful for those un-expected trail emergencies. Think of this book a s your spiritual Swiss Army Knife. K eep it handy , r ead it, study it, be familiar with the contents, and then pull it out for those times when life is confusing and raw. When youre struggling with problems , grab this book, turn to the Psalm that fits your moment and find hope on Gods lap.

Christian h ope is not a longing or yearning for God to help; it is not waiting for the slim chance that things may get better. Genuine hope is the confidence that God is in y our life and on your side , now and forever, and that nothing can separate you from his love.

True hope is resting in the unending love of your creator, expecting him to act on your behalf.

In this book we will examine ten Psalms that all have the common thread of helping us find hope in the midst of difficulty.

Psalms are Hebrew poems that were set to music and used by the Israelites for worship , prayer , and expressing their emotions . Studying them helps us connect with God and understand h is ways as we read how King David and others learned to cry out to God in the midst of their struggles.

Joined with faith and l ove, hope is an e ssential and fundamental element of the Christian life. Faith and hope are so closely linked that they cannot be separated and we find it difficult to discern the difference. Still , there is a difference between them. Faith is belief in the promises of God. Hope is a soldier; it fights for us as we wait for the goodness of God to accomplish his will in and for us .

Hope is the confident expectation, the sure certainty that what God has promised , he will deliver.

Each chapter of this book examines one Psalm, one tool in our spiritual Swiss Army Knife. I pray that as you enter into the emotions and experience the truths of these P salms, you will be filled with hope as I have .
