Bhagavad Gt in brief

Preface

Salutation to the Supreme Lord

Namaste,

We are going to study Srmad Bhagavad Gt,which is the Song of Peace, a discourse given by Lord Krushna tohis favourite disciple Arjuna, and strangely it was delivered onthe battlefield of Kurukshetra when the famous war ofMhbhrata was about to begin. After the discourse of peace wasover, Arjuna faught the war and won it. Only difference was beforediscourse he was agitated and after discourse he won the war withtranquil mind. So when I say Srmad Bhagavad Gt is a song ofpeace, I mean it teaches how to maintain the serene state of mindeven when there is chaos all around us. I do not mean it teached usto maintain peace all around us at any cost, rather it says thatsometimes when the order in society is destroyed by restless peoplethen for the welfare of society, serene people have to interfereand establish the order again, even with the help of violence.Important factor is though engaged in any situation, we learn toremain tranquil and take just decisions; Srmad Bhagavad Gtteaches us the art of serenity in chaotic and stressful situationsof life. Srmad Bhagavad Gt is a message given to Arjuna and allof us to become peaceful and still it teaches to fulfil our dutiesalso, then no matter the duty might be of a fighter or a soldierwho helps to maintain the society by punishing the evil doers,Srmad Bhagavad Gt does not teach to abandon the duty and remaininactive. It teaches us to be peacefully dynamic, the method ofKarma Yoga.

Srmad Bhagavad Gt is included in BhshmaParva, a part of epic Mhbhrata, by sage Vysa. Mhbhrata isknown for its famous war that took place on Kurukshetra.Lord Krushna tried his best by negotiating between Pndavas andKauravas to avoid the war but He could not succeed. Two armies cameface to face of each other for war. At that moment, Arjuna askedKrushna, who was helping Arjuna by becoming his charioteer, to takehis chariot between the two armies so that he could observe withwhom he had to fight. Here begins the Bhagavad Gt when Arjuna gotdepressed by seeing all his relatives standing there to fight witheach other, and he declared to Krushna that he was not going tofight the war. However, before the declaration, he surrendered toLord Krushna, accepted Him as his Guru, and asked His advice. Thismove of Arjuna was very important because if he had simply rejectedto fight the war and went out of battlefield then today we wouldnot be studying Bhagavad Gt because Gt is the discourse thatLord Krushna gave to Arjuna to free him from delusion and help himto attain peace.

Sanjaya, who was charioteer of KingDhrutarshtra, had heard this discussion between Krushna and Arjunafrom a vast distance because he had got the power of clairvoyanceand clairaudio from sage Vysa. In the beginning, sage Vysaoffered this power to Dhrutarshtra but he denied it and asked togive this power to Sanjaya.

Theme of Bhagavad Gt is Arjunas depressionand discourse from Lord Krushna to him about how to get out ofdepression. However, while helping Arjuna, Lord Krushna tells himmany methods to attain peace and synthesizes three differentschools, karma, dnyna and bhakti. Ultimately,Lord tells Arjuna His own favorite method that is surrendering toGod. In Bhagavad Gt, we can briefly hear about many philosophiesthrough Krushna and Krushnas own opinion about the best philosophythat can take us to salvation or peace. On some occasions, LordKrushna has given clear explanation about what is the exact meaningof salvation or liberation.

While doing this study, I will try my best todefine the words of Lord Krushna as He might have intended. Manygreat philosophers and teachers of different schools of Hinduismhave already tried to explain Bhagavad Gt according to theirviewpoints. Some of them have tried to explain Gt in terms ofdifferent philosophies of Vedanta like Dvaita, Achintya Bhedbheda, and Advaita etc. Proponents of renunciation orSanysa have tried to explain Bhagavad Gt interms of renounced order of life. di ankarchrya has explainedBhagavad Gt in terms of renounced order of life. Why he did so?For answer we will have to look at the society in the days of diankarchrya. In the days of di ankarchrya most of the Indiansociety was attracted towards the monks of Buddhism and Jainism, people were impressed by those monks. di ankarchrya had no waybut to accept this compulsion and explain the Bhagavad Gt interms of renunciation so that at least people study the rightknowledge in the beginning, once they understand the message ofGt then it would be comparatively easy to promote them towardsthe karma yoga. Therefore, di ankarchrya created his ownsangha of Vaidik monks to face the monks of Buddhism andJainism.

Proponents of karma or work have tried toexplain it in terms of working continuously. Schools of Dvaita andAchintya Bhedbheda try to present sectarian picture of Gt andthe person Krushna as only God. I have no problem in worshippingKrushna but they suggest worshipping Krushna to attain his serviceand stay in GolokaVrundvana eternally as hisservants. Some of these people go to the extent that they suggestmerging in God or Brahman is not advisable, because Brahman isbliss and we should remain as a person to enjoy that bliss, if wemerge with Brahman then we would not be able to enjoy that bliss, therefore we should remain as a person in higher planes orloka or spiritual sky and live there with God forever. Ithink this is the worst type of exploitation of God, and if that isthe reason why they want to remain as servants of God to exploitHim and enjoy His bliss then I think it is wrong, I am not in favorof such thinking. I think we should leave it to God, if He thinkswe are useful as His servants then He will keep our personalitiesand when He thinks that it is time to merge our personalities withHim then He will dissolve our personalities.
