Calls to prayer echo out over valleys and rooftops. The ringing of church bells and the wailing siren for Shabbat are omnipresent. Deeply significant to the three largest monotheistic religions in the worldJudaism, Christianity, and Islamthe city of Jerusalem is filled with prayers and songs of different faiths. The timeworn, earthen-colored stones of the Old City have borne witness to thousands of years of history.

Pilgrims come here to walk in the footsteps that their religion took on its path to coming into the world: to touch the Western Wall, Judaisms holiest site; to stand where Jesus stood while crying over the coming destruction of Jerusalem; or to see the light gleaming off the golden Dome of the Rock, built over the stone where Muslims believe Muhammad ascended to heaven.

Many wait their entire lives to experience this timeless city, where the past feels present. See it yourself and you will begin to understand. Is it any wonder this place has inspired such passions, such devotion, such faith?

Passports and Visas

Many countries have a visa waiver agreement with Israel, including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, which means you only need to purchase a round-trip ticket to show your impending departure. You will be issued a visa upon entering Israel. Your passport must be good for at least six months past the date of your departure from the country.

Security

Check any travel advisories from foreign governments, such as the U.S. Department of States travel advisories section on its website, before departing. Sporadic violence might mean that you choose not to visit a certain area.

Transportation

The best and most common way to get to this region is by airplane, which will take you to Tel Avivs Ben Gurion International Airport. Entry from Jordan or Egypt is also possible by car, and arrival by cruise ship over international waters commonly occurs via the Port of Haifa.

Though the geographic area of Israel and the West Bank is fairly small, the complex security situation does require some advance planning. Within Jerusalem, public transportation and taxis make it fairly easy to get around. For travel beyond isolated locales, it is best to get a rental car. Long-distance buses will also get you around cheaply and efficiently, but they can require a sense of adventure and extra time for potential mishaps. The Israel Railways train is also an option, especially for going to and from the airport.

What to Pack

Bringing the right clothing is incredibly important, particularly comfortable shoes, as there is a lot of rough terrain and bumpy cobblestones at various tourist sites, parks, and some cities. In some places you will be need to dress conservatively, particularly if youre a woman. A few long-sleeve shirts, pants, and long skirts should suffice. At least one cotton scarf to guard against dusty winds, chills, and sweat is a must for men and women. A scarf can be easily purchased once there, too.

Stick to skirts that are either below the knee or more fitted, and lower-heeled or flat shoes, preferably with more support so you wont twist your ankle while walking on the uneven stones.

No matter when you go, take some kind of a light jacket (heavier in the winter months), as it can get cool in many areas during the evening. You will also need a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a good water canister if you have one. Beyond that, you will just need a sense of adventure and a good guidebook.

Jerusalems Old City

Follow the main road downhill through the tightly packed shops selling all kinds of scarves, food, trinkets, jewelry, and souvenirs and try your hand at the regional custom of negotiating for a deal. Then head for the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built on the spot where many believe Jesus was crucified, buried, and resurrected. From here, head to the Austrian Hospice for an incredible view of old and new Jerusalem from the rooftop and a piece of famous apple strudel in the quiet gardens.

After leaving the Austrian Hospice, wander around a bit as you work your way toward the Western Wall, Al Aqsa Mosque,
