Brauns Artistic Sheet Metal Ornaments is one in a series of reprints of books and trade catalogs published by special agreement between The Athenaeum of Philadelphia and Dover Publications, Inc. The objective of this series is to make available to the greatest possible audience rare and often fragile documents from the extensive collections of The Athenaeum in sturdy and inexpensive editions. The Athenaeum of Philadelphia is an independent research library with museum collections founded in 1814 to collect materials connected with the history and antiquities of America, and the useful arts, and generally to disseminate useful knowledge. It is housed in a handsomely restored National Historic Landmark building near Independence Hall in the heart of the historic area of Philadelphia. As the collections expanded over the past 175 years, The Athenaeum refined its objectives. Today the library concentrates on nineteenth- and early twentieth-century social and cultural history, particularly architecture and interior design where the collections are nationally significant.

The library is freely open to serious investigators, and it annually attracts thousands of readers: graduate students and senior scholars, architects, interior designers, museum curators and private owners of historic houses. In addition to 130,000 architectural drawings, 25,000 historic photographs and several million manuscripts, The Athenaeums library is particularly rich in original works on architecture, interior design and domestic technology. In the latter area the publications of manufacturers and dealers in architectural elements and interior embellishments have been found to be particularly useful to design professionals and historic house owners who are concerned with the restoration or the recreation of period interiors. Consequently, many of the reprints in this series are drawn from this collection.
