Fatty liver, also known as steatosis, is a general term that refers to the accumulation of fats in the liver. Fats in the liver is normal, however, when the percentage of fat is more than 5 to 10 percent, it results to a disease called fatty liver disease.
Fortunately, fatty liver disease is a reversible condition that typically goes away on its own. It produces a few symptoms, which only a few people experience and does not actually cause any permanent damage.
The liver is actually the second largest organ in the body. Its function is to process what you eat and drink , and filter out the harmful and toxic substances from your blood. If there is already too much fat buildup in your liver, the livers ability to process is interfered with. The liver naturally repairs itself by building new liver cells when the old ones become damaged. However, when the liver gets repeatedly damaged, it may result in permanent scarring, called cirrhosis.
As mentioned earlier, having fat in the liver is common. But if it takes up more than 5 to 10 percent of your liver weight, then you might develop alcoholic or non-alcoholic liver disease called fatty liver disease.
- Alcoholic liver disease (ALD). A lot of people tend to overuse alcohol and out of all these people, about 90 to 100 percent of them have fatty livers. Fatty liver disease can be a result of drinking moderate to huge volumes of alcohol. The disease may also become a result of a night of binge alcohol drinking, which is called acute alcoholic liver disease. Genetics and heredity can play a big role in the development of alcoholic liver disease. They may influence your alcohol consumption and your probability of developing alcoholism. Aside from that, they can also affect the capability of your liver enzymes to break down or metabolize alcohol. There are more factors that can influence your risk of having alcoholic fatty liver disease. These factors are:
- Hepatitis C
- Excess iron in the body
- Obesity
- Poor diet
- Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is one the common causes of chronic liver disease among people in the United States. People with lots of fat buildup in their liver have the disease called fatty liver. While, it is not normal, NAFLD is not something that is serious or life threatening. It also does not cause any inflammation or permanent damage.
Other people have the non-alcoholic steatohepatisis (NASH). This type of fatty liver disease is comparable to alcoholic liver disease; however, people who have this sort of disease drink only little to no alcohol at all. NASH can also cause some permanent liver damage because the disease causes it to enlarge and instead of replacing old liver cells with new ones, it simply develops scar tissues called cirrhosis. As a result, the liver cannot function properly, which may cause it to fail, develop liver cancer, or result in a liver-related death. This type of fatty liver disease is among the primary reasons why cirrhosis occurs. The 2 types of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease are becoming more common. Based on research, 20 percent of adults and more than about 6 million children, mostly Hispanic and Asian, have fatty liver or NASH. Recent studies also show that NAFLD can increase the risk of heart diseases in obese or overweight children.
Fatty liver does not typically show any symptoms. There may be people who might feel more exhausted than usual and some who might feel some slight discomfort in the abdominal area. If you go through a physical exam, your doctor will check for any enlargement of your liver, which can be an indication of a fatty liver.
If your liver is inflamed, it can result to some other symptoms like reduced appetite, sudden or consistent weight loss and feeling sick or weak.
The primary cause of fatty liver is alcoholism. People who are heavy drinkers usually develop fatty liver because the alcohol damages the liver cells and slows the livers ability to produce new ones. Aside from alcohol, specific types of drugs, toxins, and hereditary metabolic disorders can also cause it. Many doctors are still not sure what actually causes fatty liver, especially in people who occasionally drink or do not drink alcohol at all, however, the development has been linked to high blood cholesterol, type 2-diabetes, and obesity. Aside from alcoholism, fatty liver can also result from viruses such as hepatitis A, pregnancy, tamoxifen, toxins, tetracycline, steroids, drugs, aspirin, type 2-diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome.
The causes of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease are a mystery. There are some factors that contribute to having an increased risk, but in most cases, the risk factors never show up. NAFLD, however, tends to run in the family and is mostly present in people who are middle aged and overweight. These people usually have high triglycerides or cholesterol and diabetes. Aside from that though, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease can also be caused by autoimmune liver disease, medications, malnutrition, viral hepatitis, precipitous weight loss, and growth of bacteria in the intestine.
Unfortunately, fatty liver often shows no symptoms, especially when it is only a mild case. However, there will be some instances wherein you may feel more tired than usual and experience occasional pain in the area where your liver is located, which is on your right side just below your ribs. The discomfort is caused by the accumulation of fat in your liver, which enlarges it and stretches the delicate membrane that surrounds it. If fatty liver is not reversed, it may progress, which can permanently scar the liver and result in a condition called cirrhosis. If it does develop into cirrhosis, you may notice the following symptoms:
- Swollen abdomen
- Scratchy skin
- Vomiting blood
- Passing blood
- Getting confused easily
- Having poor memory
- Bruising easily
- Weakness or fatigue
- Yellowish skin
- Yellowish eyes
The symptoms of fatty liver should be taken seriously, even though it has the ability to naturally heal itself. For you to understand why this disease can be dangerous, you need to learn about the functions the liver does. The liver is the one responsible for controlling and maintaining your metabolism. The liver has the responsibility to burn your fat and remove it from the your system. When your liver is in good condition, losing weight will never become a problem, but when it becomes a fatty liver, the process will reverse. Instead of burning fat, it stores it and as it becomes a storage space of fat, it slowly develops into other serious health conditions like obesity, high cholesterol levels, and high blood pressure. These conditions should be treated immediately because if not, the liver will become permanently damaged, which will increase your risk of developing hepatitis or cirrhosis, which can cause death.
