THE 90 MINUTE BOOK OUTLINE How to Outline Your Nonfiction Book in One Seating... And Cut Your Writing Time in Half R.T. Tolentino Part 1 - Pre-Outlining Part 2 - Outlining Your Book in One Seating Part 3 Writing Tips & Resources Accountability Partner About the Author Introduction The first book that Id ever published was a book on how to create a website. It was 30 pages, and it took me 2 weeks to finish it. And it sucks! What sucks even more is I could have finished it in 2 hours. But I was too lazy, and my mind was all over the place.
How hard could it be to write a step by step book on how to create a website, right? My biggest mistake was not planning beforehand. I figured that since I already know how to create a website, I might as well write about it. Then reality strikes. I realize that there is more to creating a website than just clicking buttons. I still have to explain why the readers should do this and do that. After finishing the book, its not even as good as what I expected it to be.
I was happy that I was finally able to write my first book, but at the same time, I was pissed off as I could have finished it faster. But, what happens well, happens. I have to move on, learn from my mistakes and write another book. My next attempt to writing a book was about a niche I knew nothing about. It was in the dating & relationship niche. This time, its even more important that I do the pre-production (outlining & research) stuff even more seriously.
So I put my writer hat, start outlining and get to work. The result was better than the first attempt. I was able to finish a 40-page book in just 9 days. Its not the best damn thing since sliced bread, but Im pretty happy with the results. In this book, Im going to show you all that I learned from publishing and ghostwriting dozens of books since I started a year ago. Im not claiming to be the best writer, best book outliner or whatever.
Im just here to share my experience with you, and hopefully, my system will work for you. I honestly believe that outlining is one of the biggest shortcuts to writing faster, better and clearer. In this book, Im going to show you real life examples on how to outline a book. Im even going to give you the exact outline I used for this book. Importance of Outlining Here are 3 major benefits of outlining your book. 1 Write Faster Im not sure how Im going to finish a book without outlining it first.
By planning my book and putting the time and effort in the pre-production, I was able to write faster and finished my book in record time. It makes sense because once you know what youre going to talk about, you get to spend less time thinking and more time writing. 2 Minimize Unnecessary Research Most authors do research first before they start outlining their books. This makes sense only if you are writing about a topic where youre not an expert in. But if you already know your topic by heart, then most of the research is already done inside your head. 3 Organized Writing Process If you feel that if what youre writing is all over the place, then worry no more. 3 Organized Writing Process If you feel that if what youre writing is all over the place, then worry no more.
The outlining process makes sure that you get to organize your thoughts and write in a step by step manner. Can you really outline a book in one sitting? Yes, but only if you have a system, a template if you will. The system that Im going to show you have worked well for me Im pretty sure its going to work for you too. But who knows? You can also outline a book in just one seating if you know exactly what youre talking about. Meaning, you have some experience in your topic or at least, you are interested in learning more about your topic. In addition, the outlining system that Im going to teach you requires you to be open and honest.
You need to be open in sharing your stories, mistakes, failures and successes. If not, I dont think the system will work for you or youll have a mediocre book as a result. Now, if youre not an expert on your topic or you dont have any stories to share then you got to do a little bit more research. If youre willing to do that, then read on. The Outlining Process Blueprint 1 - Book Angle This is the part where we think about the exact goals of your book. This is important because you want to write a book that will solve the right problem to the right audience.
Well also try to match your book angle to the markets need. Skip this step and your book will probably reach fewer people. 2 Brain Dump After the first step, youll do a brain dump where you put everything that you know about your topic. 3 Research This is not book content research. This research is about knowing your numbers. How many pages should you write? How many chapters? What are the stories you can share? 4 Creating the beatOutlining your book in one seating.
This is where the rubber meets the road. All of our preparation will be put in this part. Im going to teach you the step by step method on how to outline your book. 5 Cut the fat This is the step where we throw out everything that is not needed. The rule of thumb (which means the number that I invented), is that 5% of your outline is probably useless for that book. Those are the steps to outlining your book.
After teaching you the outlining process, Ill then show you some examples of real outlines from my books and give you some explanation or commentary for it. Well also discuss some way to creatively outline your book. Outlining is really boring for most people, what well do is make it a bit more fun. All right, that is quite a long introduction but I needed to say all of that. Lets dive into the first step which is all about youre your book angle. ACTION STEPS* At the end of every chapter, I will give you a list of action steps to take.
Itll give you a pretty good idea of what to do especially if youre stuck in that part. Part 1 Pre-production or Pre-outlining Chapter 1 - Your Book Angle The first step to outlining your book is finding your book angle. What is it that you want to write about? What is it that your audience wants to read? You have to find the happy place where both parties will benefit from each other. Think of your book angle as the hook for your book. When you watched your favorite movies, theres always some hook, some main storyline that will be shown in it. For the movie and the book The Godfather, its about an Italian mafia who got shot and his sons revenge against other mafias.
To apply this in your non-fiction book, you have to find your own hook or the main benefit of your book. You probably dont have time to spend hours and hours of your time outlining your book. So for this book that you are reading, the hook was to outline a non-fiction book in 90 minutes or in one sitting. I use that hook because I know that you (my readers) most likely have full-time jobs or busy at your business. Here are some examples of my most favorite hooks from non-fiction authors. 1 The Secret by Rhonda Byrne Whether you believe in the law of attraction or not, you cant deny how powerful the hook is for this book.
Who wouldnt want to know the secret to success? 2 The 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss Did you know that the 4 hour work week is not supposed to be titled as The 4HWW? It was supposed to be something completely different. If Tim didnt change the title, I dont think he would be a powerhouse name today. 3 Rich Dad, Poor Dad IMO, this is one of the best finance book hooks of all time. If you asked a lot of people how they got started in their entrepreneurial journey they would probably mention this book along the way. What Robert teach in this book is great. But what really made the book the best-seller that it is, is the hook itself.
Two dads, one is rich, one is poor. Narrow your topic Without your book angle, youll just be another book in the sea of millions of book already out there. Narrowing your topic/angle allows you to have a more targeted audience and a book that has a clearer message In addition, a highly targeted topic will result in a better book. Your readers will love you because itll feel as if you wrote the book just for that one reader. Find Out What They Want Before you start writing, you need to consider your audience first. 1 What is the number one benefit of reading my book? This will be your one sentence summary and your main hook for the book. 1 What is the number one benefit of reading my book? This will be your one sentence summary and your main hook for the book.
