While honoring Jerome Singers impressive career in psychology, this volume demonstrates the broad and integrative influence the study of consciousness is having across a variety of subdisciplines of psychology--experimental, personality, developmental, social, and clinical. The contributors to this volume represent both pioneers in the study of consciousness and contemporary researchers whose work has followed in the spirit of their predecessors seminal work. This book will serve as a landmark end-of-the-century statement about psychologys understanding of the role of consciousness in affective and cognitive processes, the development of imagination in children, and its application to the practice of psychotherapy.

PREFACE
The study of consciousness includes research about ongoing thought, dreaming and daydreaming, autobiographical memory, and fantasy. For the first 60 years of this century, research in these areas was relegated to a minor status in psychology by adherents to the two major theoretical paradigms of the timebehaviorism and psychoanalysis. Behaviorists considered the covert products of conscious experiencethoughts and feelingsto be epiphenomenal and unnecessary to explanatory models of behavior. Psychoanalytic theorists viewed the products of consciousness as mere screens for more critical aspects of personality, submerged in the unconscious.
With the information-processing revolution of the late 1950s and early 1960s, the role of conscious thought in the construction of personality and identity, described by James in the previous century, again became a matter of central concern for researchers in psychology. The innovative theorizing of Simon and Neisser about cognition, Tomkins about emotion, and Kelly and Klein about personality began to be integrated by cognitively oriented researchers who brought the rigor of experimental methods to the study of ongoing conscious experience. Anticipating the present-day excitement about the influence of cognitive interpretation on social behavior and social cognition, these investigators relied on the collection of verbal protocols, the analysis of mental chronometry, and computer simulation to get inside the head in a systematic and experimentally verifiable manner.
