Introduction: Triumph over Adversity
Having overcome war and deep divisions, todays Vietnam is now better known for its breathtaking scenery, beaches and vibrant cities.
Modern yet traditional, communist yet capitalist, cosmopolitan yet quaint calling Vietnam diverse doesnt even begin to tell the story. Its associations with war may still be present, but today the tunnels are tourist traps, the tanks are displayed in museums and the divisions are all but healed.
The sheer range of landscapes and attractions makes Vietnam something of a challenge. The long, sandy beaches and the turquoise seas are tempting, but then so are its forested mountains and verdant countryside. Vietnamese cities are dynamic, full of life and colour.

Back in 1975 when the last US troops fled Vietnam, things were not so rosy. The country was reunified but faced a new battle economic stability. As the government clung firmly to its MarxistLeninist blueprint, the country floundered. By the mid-1980s, Vietnam was on the brink of bankruptcy; some people were starving, and inflation topped 800 percent. The economic revolution known as doi moi began in 1986 and opened up the country to foreign investment and foreign visitors. From 2000 to 2007 Vietnam was one of the worlds fastest-growing economies and the darling of foreign investors.

Todays ruling communist government still keeps a tight reign on cultural and political affairs, and the sheer pace of development means major cities are packed to bursting point. Despite this, there has never been a better time to visit Vietnam as much of the progress is aimed at attracting tourism. The result is that travelling is simpler, the hotels are more luxurious and the restaurants of higher quality than ever before. Vietnam doesnt forget its past thats why many visitors come, after all but it is keen to move forward and showcase its natural beauty and its peoples friendly nature.
