Explore Maritimes & Newfoundland

Medieval Bruges is one of Europes most romantic destinations. Canals meander around gabled almshouses, Gothic churches, world-class art galleries and boutique hotels, all packaged in a central district less than 2km (1.25 miles) across.

Atlantic Canada is perhaps one of the most startlingly beautiful regions of Canada. Here are the achingly lonely beaches of Nova Scotia, the distinctive sense of humour and charming friendliness of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, the old-world, Prince Edward Island farmers, and the graceful elegance of New Brunswicks towns. The French and British fought over the three Maritime provinces for almost two hundred years, and today the French-speaking Acadian population remains culturally distinct. After the American Revolution, Loyalists flooded Atlantic Canada, adding another cultural layer. Newfoundland and Labradors early history was dominated by the seasonal cod, whale and seal fisheries, with year-round outports eventually settled by hardy English and Irish fishermen giving the province much of its character today.

Geography and Layout

The area covered in this book is vast, some half a million square kilometres, much of it isolated wilderness fronting Canadas eastern Atlantic coast. The ocean, and especially the Bay of Fundy and Gulf of St Lawrence, dominates life here, with the port of Halifax in Nova Scotia the regions biggest city. The tours in this book begin with the port of St Johns, then proceed geographically across Newfoundland and Labrador from east to west, taking in the most popular and attraction-rich areas of the province. The focus then shifts to Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and finally New Brunswick.
