On December 6, 1876, Dr. Edward Jarvis wrote to Rev. Grindall Reynolds, minister of the First Parish church, "It would be interesting to look into the houses and families of the last century, still more a hundred years earlier and see their manner of life, their furniture, their food, cookery, drinks etc." He continued,
