one of my earliest memories as a child is standing on a train platform and waving good-
bye to my grandmother who had decided to travel around the world. at age 60! everywhere
she stopped over the next two years, from tonga to tibet, she would send me a beautiful doll
dressed in a traditional local costume. my passion for adventure began right then and there.
through her gifts, the world seemed like a fascinating place and i couldn't wait to explore it.
over the years, its been magical seeing things ive read about come to lifelike the swan-
shaped pedal boats in rio de janeiro and monets water garden in giverny. ive had the fortune
to live in so many places that, at times, ive felt like a snail with my house on my back. today
manhattan is my home sweet home, but ive still got my wanderlustthe world is just too full
of natural wonders, vintage treasures and talented artisans creating the most imaginative
things to be sitting behind a desk. i get my best ideas when i travel. even if i visit the same
place twenty times, it always feels new and full of possibilities.
to this day, i cant go anywhere without bringing something back, even if its from a local news-
stand. i love seeking out the local specialtylike pearls in hong kong and batiks in baliand
i bring an extra, empty suitcase with me in order to get it all home. perhaps i can thank my
grandmother for that inspiration.
travel adds so much color to our daily lives at kate spade new york that we wanted to share
that love with you. this book, then, is a compilation of all the places, people and things that
spark our wanderlust, feed our curiosity and inspire us to treat every day as an adventure.
i hope this inspires your own journey, wherever it takes you.

ESCAPE THE ORDINARY
every time we step out of our routine, we set out on a voyage
of discovery. it may be across town to explore a new art gallery, or across
the world to experience an ancient tea ceremony. short or long haul,
big adventure or small, we seize the opportunity to look around, eyes wide
with wonder, and ask, could you be any more fascinating? its the answers
we get in returnthrough new places, new foods, new languages,
new rhythms, new peoplethat inspire and change us. escaping the
ordinary is an extraordinary thing. we highly recommend it.
