This textbook is intended solely as a guide to the appropriate procedures to be employed when rendering emergency care to or transporting the sick or injured. It is not intended as a statement of the standards of care required in any particular situation, since circumstances and patients' physical conditions can vary widely from one emergency to another. Nor is it intended that this textbook shall in any way advise emergency personnel concerning legal authority to perform the activities or procedures discussed. Such determinations should be made locally only with the aid of legal counsel.
The rescue series is written with the assumption that the reader has completed a basic EMT or first responder training course. The editors believe these levels represent the minimum level of medical training suitable for patient care in the rescue setting, but all rescue personnel are encouraged to attain the highest level of training available. Throughout this module, assessment and treatment skills are mentioned that require a higher level of training and licensure than are available to basic EMTs. In addition, there are wide variances throughout the United States in what rescue personnel are permitted by law to do. This textbook is intended for nationwide use, and we have sought to include various techniques that may be helpful in particular situations; it must fall to the instructor and the reader to determine what is acceptable within one's training and jurisdiction. Before using the advanced techniques presented in the textbook, the rescuer must review his or her scope of practice as well as the legal limits of his or her other training and authorization, so as not to exceed the limits of the law and to ensure the provision of the highest possible patient care.
