Graduating to the 9-5 World
Dedicated to
To my parents "Big" Joe and Sheila for the past 28 years
of support and love. Without their examples of determination
and love, I would have never accomplished any of my goals.
To my lovely wife, Rose, my sisters Kelly and Megan, my
brother Mike, and my best friend Rupp for all their patience
and endurance while I endlessly talked about the importance
of putting the subject of this book into print.

Acknowledgements
I would like to thank all those individuals, scattered throughout the country, who openly discussed their feelings with me about their dilemmas, concerns, and personal experiences. Without their candid observations, the following pages would not have been possible.
I wish to express special gratitude to those college administrators and business executives who graciously assisted me on numerous occasions. And for those of you who revealed "off the record" opinions about various issues, I want to thank you, in advance, on behalf of the readers. Your shared experiences will allow them an opportunity to better understand some of the confusing situations they may face as they embrace the 9-5 world of work.
Without doubt, I owe a great deal to my editors and mentors (Jim Killingsworth) who helped me develop my ideas and writing into a feasible manuscript. I cannot convey how valuable Jan Booker, my final editor, was to this entire project. Jan, thank you a million times over!
And to all those who agreed that the following pages are topics which needed to be addressed in a different perspective, I hope this book helps.

Preface
Wouldn't it be nice each time you passed a test if you received credit towards the next one? Unfortunately, your performance on past exams is given no consideration towards future challenges. Entering the 9-5 world is very similarall your past performance, in the college curriculum, the athletic arena, or even graduate school, is not recognized as credit, but rather as an indicator that you should be given a chance to take the "9-5 test."
Approximately five years ago I was sitting at a Washington, DC bar Happy Hour listening to a group of recent college grads complain how the adjustment into the 9-5 workplace was very cruel and unfair. Immediately I laughed thinking that they must have gone to the wrong school or majored in the wrong curriculum. Soon I discovered that group of people were from UCLA, Marquette, Princeton, Georgetown as well as Lynchburg College, Stephen Austin, Northern Virginia Community College, and Memphis State. Furthermore, this group held as diversified an assortment of degrees (education, business, law, medicine, biology) as the variety of schools they attended. This informal Friday afternoon gathering eventually evolved into an all night debate against the system. At that time, I too did not understand
