Foreword
Licensing and certification examinations are inherently very stressful events. Proper preparation can ease the associated anxiety. This book is a valuable tool in preparing for both the written and practical portions of paramedic tests, including the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Paramedic exam.

PRAISE FOR LEARNINGEXPRESS'S EMT-Basic Exam
As an EMT instructor, I want to do the best for my students that I can. I have found that I can allay their apprehensions and reinforce their knowledge by suggesting that each student review your book methodically, page by page, test by test, and answer by answer. It seems to be working well. My students are passing with an average well above the requirement and have the confidence they need to do well.

Chapter 1 About the EMT-Paramedic Exam
Chapter Summary
This chapter tells you how to become certified as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-Paramedic). It outlines the certification requirements of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and tells you how to use this book to study for the written exam.
The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NR-EMT) was established in 1970 in response to a suggestion of the U.S. Committee on Highway Safety. Today, the NR-EMT is an independent, not-for-profit agency whose job is to certify that EMTs and paramedics have the knowledge and skills to do their jobsto save lives and preserve health. By setting uniform national standards for training, testing, and continuing education, the NR-EMT helps ensure patient safety throughout the United States.
In some states, the NR-EMT certification process is the only licensure process for EMTs and paramedics. Other states have their own testing procedures. (A list of specific certification requirements for all fifty states is found in Chapter 8.) Both the NR-EMT and the state tests are based on the same curriculum, which is issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Therefore, whether you will be taking a state test or the NR-EMT test, you will be learning and studying the same material. This book is based on the NR-EMT written examination.
