PREFACE
I originally began work on this volume in the summer of 1981. Along the way, many changes have taken place and I have incurred many debts - more than I can recount. Thanks are certainly due to the NEH for giving me a stipend to attend a seminar for college teachers on the history of hermeneutics at the University of Iowa in 1981. Jerry Bruns, the director of the seminar, was very supportive of my plans and helped me to see a clearer outline of its final form. Merold Westphal and David Hoy also deserve a special word, for in addition to making their work available to me they provided advice and much-needed support at some of the darker moments of the volume's development. I must also thank Augustana Research Foundation for a summer grant in 1982, which enabled me to write my article for this volume. Reiner Wiehl and Hans-Georg Gadamer are to be thanked for their support and for their willingness to take time from their busy schedules to discuss my work for this volume. Kathleen Wright deserves special mention not only for her insightful and tactful advice, but also for her willingness to read a draft of my translation of Reiner Wiehl's article. She saved it from many errors and gave me a better idea of what translation is about. Robert Dostal also deserves thanks for his friendly and judicious advice. The Board on Faculty Research at Saint Joseph's University supplied me with a summer grant in 1984 and a grant-in-aid in 1986 which enabled me to finish much of the work for this volume. My thanks to the board and to the university. Joy Ansky and Carolyn McNasby did the tedious work of typing the bibliography, and Joanne Devlin and Ethel Ritter have typed and retyped many parts of the manuscript. They deserve a great deal more than thanks. Without their tireless efforts this volume
