TOPIC 1: Ways to start talking to other people
Activities: There are steps and ways that you need to follow when you want to start talking to other people. The steps to follow are: A. Tell them who you are - introduce yourself. B. Find things you both like or are interested in. C.
Talk about the things you both like or are interested in. D. Be a good listener. E. Stop talking when there is no more to say. Review the following: Sarah had just moved into a new apartment complex.
Most of the people there were young and got together for a cookout and pool party on the first Saturday of every month. On the day she moved in, Sarah met her next door neighbor, Cynthia. How could Sarah start talking with Cynthia by following the steps above? Develop some questions and statements that Sarah could use. The steps to start talking to other people can be used with many different people. Review the following: Raymond wanted to make an appointment with Mrs. Mrs. Mrs.
Chelsy is the manager of the company where he works. He was not getting along with his supervisor, Mr. Smith. Raymond felt that Mr. Smith was picking on him. Mr.
Smith was always watching him at work and if it even looked like he was going to make a mistake, Mr. Smith came over and yelled that Raymond didn't know anything. Even when Raymond did the job right, Mr. Smith didn't seem satisfied. What really bothered Raymond was that Mr. Smith didn't treat any of the other employees like he treated him.
Raymond decided he'd had enough and wanted Mrs. Chelsy to move him to another department and give him a different supervisor. How should Raymond start talking to Mrs. Chelsy? Develop the questions and statements Raymond might use.
Assignments: Describe how you would start talking with your boss to get an increase in pay. Describe how you would start talking with an employer who might hire you for a job. Describe how you would start talking with a new neighbor who you would like to get to know.
TOPIC 2: Helping others
Activities: Describe times when you needed help. Tell how it feels when you are unable to complete something that you want to get done. Do you feel frustrated or irritated? This is how people usually feel at times like that. For example, you might feel this way when you are completing a class or work project, doing a difficult work assignment, or learning a dance routine. Sometimes you can avoid these feelings by asking someone to help you. Other people may need your help at times.
It is important to know when to give help. Sometimes it is correct to give help and other times it is not correct. Here are some rules for helping others: A. If someone asks for help, try to help him or her. B. C. C.
If someone has a hard task, ask if he or she needs help. D. Do not try to help someone if he or she has refused your help. E. Do not try to help someone if you cant do what he or she is trying to do. Explain to him or her why you can't help.
Assignments: Give the rule for asking for help and why it is correct for the following:
Carol spilled water all over the floor. She had to hurry to work. She asked her friend Ann to wipe up the water. Give the correct rule for the following and why you would give help: A visually-impaired mans seeing-eye dog seems to be confused. The dog is leading the man into a fence. The man tries to pull the dog back, but the dog is not moving.
The man is getting upset. List as many rules for helping that you can think of without looking at the list in Activity 1. TOPIC 3: Getting help when you need it
Activities: Everyone needs help sometimes. There are things that you just cant do by yourself. For example: carrying a large table across a room or playing football. Some things are easier for you to do with help.
For example: cleaning your apartment, washing the car, learning a new work assignment, or coming up with some ideas for a party.
There are correct and incorrect ways to ask for help. Here are some rules for correct ways to ask for help. A. Make sure the person has time to help you. B.
Ask politely. Say things like, Excuse me... Please... or Do you mind...? C. Be sure to thank the person after he or she helps you. D.
Ask someone you think is able to help you. E. Dont be upset if the person is not able to help you or does not want to help you. You need to use actions and words that make it clear that you are asking for help and what you need help with.
Assignments: List ways to ask for help with a home or work assignment. List ways to ask for help in changing a tire on a bike or car.
List ways to ask for help when shopping for food. TOPIC 4: When someone refuses to help you
Activities: Sometimes when you ask people to do something for you or to give you something, they may say no. Sometimes they may not tell you why they cant help you and other times they may explain their reasons. When someone refuses to give you help, you need to know what to do. There are correct things to do and incorrect things to do. A. A.
Yell at the person B. Curse at the person C. Throw things at the person D. Cry E. Stomp away With a partner, role play the following:
Lee is very good at operating the computer at work. Thomas, on the other hand, tries very hard but keeps making mistakes.
Thomas knows that if he doesn't get better, he will be fired. Thomas asks Lee to help him understand how to enter information into the computer. Lees says, No, I dont have the time right now. Thomas yells at Lee, You think you are so smart; you could take a few minutes to help me but, no, you dont want anyone to get as good as you. I cant stand you. How do you think Lee felt about what Thomas said? How do you think Thomas felt? Discuss the following correct responses: A.
Why cant you help me? Can you do it later? Do you know anyone else that could help me? B. Saying OK and asking someone else. C. Saying you will help the person with something else if he or she will help you. Let's rewrite the story about Thomas and Lee in Activity 1 so that Thomas gives some correct responses. Lee is very good at operating the computer at work.
