About the Author
Karl Samson lives in Oregon, where he spends his time juggling his obsessions with traveling, gardening, outdoor sports, and wine. Each winter, to dry out his webbed feet, he flees the soggy Northwest to update Frommers Arizona. However, he always looks forward to his return to the land of good espresso. Karl is also the author of Frommers Washington, Frommers Seattle, and Frommers Portable Portland.
Acknowledgments
Updating a Frommers guide is always a daunting task, requiring long hours on the road and long hours at the computer. Without good espresso, those hours can turn to tedium. Luckily, I have an office above a remarkable little cafe that is always my first stop before starting work and my last stop before leaving town on a research trip. For providing the pastries and cappuccinos that made the updating of this book not just possible but a pleasure, I would like to thank Lee Thompson: friend, neighbor, caf artiste, and pstissier par excellence. Merci, Lee.

Chapter 1: The Best of Oregon
To 19th-century pioneers, Oregon was the promised land, a land of plenty, a land of opportunity. Things havent changed that much in the ensuing 150 years. People looking to start new lives are still moving to Oregon in droves, and many native Oregonians are envisioning new ways to make Oregon a better place. Farmers are pioneering organic and sustainable farms close to urban centers so that the farms can reduce their carbon footprint. Urban pioneers, young creative types, are eschewing cars in favor of bicycles and public transit. There are organic wineries and breweries, microdistilleries, and tiny coffee roasters. There are mountains and beaches and deserts and vineyards. Together the people and the landscape spell the good life in Oregon, and for the visitor, it is these same factors that make the state such a great vacation destination.
