PREFACE

The photos in this book portray American aircraft production in World War II, including representative views of the various types of planes and operations involved. Lengthy research through various governmental and private archives failed to turn up production photos for all types of American World War II aircraft, and, of the production photos found, not all major operations in the construction process could be portrayed for each aircraft. Sadly, much has been lost to history. The photos presented here, however, do form a brief survey that conveys the massiveness of the American aircraft-production program and the speed and professionalism with which it was carried out. It is hoped that the reader will thereby come to appreciate what was done in those heady days of trial and tribulation of so long ago.

Special thanks to the following individuals and organizations for their support of this project: George Dade, Mike Machat, Jim Maas, Jay Frey, Peter Kirkup, Lois Lovisolo, Harry Gann and Jim Boss; the National Air and Space Museum, the Grumman Corporation, the McDonnell Douglas Corporation, the General Dynamics Corporation, the EDO Corporation and the Nassau County Museum.

INTRODUCTION

The President talks of only 5,000 more planes and when I talk of 50,000 Im called demented. But the time is going to come when well be crying for 100,000 planesand more.

GENERAL WILLIAM (BILLY) MITCHELL, 1936

One of the greatest industrial feats of all time was the massive production of aircraft by American manufacturers during World War II. In many ways, the Allied victory hinged on this huge American industrial contribution. This achievement also resulted in several new developments in American industry: (1) The true mass production of military aircraft, a phenomenon never seen before or since. (2) The unprecedented introduction of large numbers of women and minorities into the skilled work force. (3) The greatest period of camaraderie and high morale among workersever.
