Chapter 1 - Apocalyptic Forecasts

Apocalyptic forecasts are nothing new.For thousands of years men and women who believe that they have received special personal messages from their maker have been proclaiming that the end is near. Fortunately, so far they have been wrong. The Earth continues to spin about the sun as it has for billions of years and humans continue to rule the planet as they have for at least a few hundred thousand years. But no doubt eventually our world will come to an end.Scientists tell us our sun will burnout in the distant future and in its death throes will likely die in a way that will consume the earth in super heated gases and cremate,no destroy all traces, of whatever living creatures remain. Fortunately, this apocalyptic event is believed to be 5 billion or so years into the future. Why worry about an event that will likely take place so far into the future?

The fact is few humans worry about a distant certain event but millions, probably even billions, do worry about the remote possibility of what might happen at the end of 2012. There are many who think that human life, indeed almost all life, on our tiny spinning globe is about to end. The winter solstice,December 21,in the year 2012 could usher in a day of celebration of new cycles of life or a day of tragic chaos. December 21, 2012 has been marked as a special day since the time of the Maya, whose Long Calendar first proclaimed it as the end of a great 5,126 year cycle. Now as 2012 approaches huge numbers of people all over the world are getting nervous. With the end of the Mayan calendar mean the day of reckoning will soon be upon us? Will December 21 be just another day of life on Earth or will it be the beginning of an apocalyptic nightmare? Soon we will know. 2012 could be a year like any other or it could be a year of extreme hardship, even death for most, perhaps all,of the human race.

Why the focus on the year 2012? The answer to that question is pretty straightforward. There are at least eight theories that forecast 2012 as a critical year for life on Earth. This book will devote a chapter to each of these theories, starting with the most publicized one, the end of the Maya calendar cycle. As the Mayan civilization was an advanced one, especially in mathematics and agricultural, the sudden mysterious decline and termination of the Mayan Empire has for centuries captured the imaginations of both anthropologists and the general public. The end of the Maya Long Count cycle in the year 2012 has focused attention on that year for those who believe that the end of our world is coming soon. There are at least seven other theories that focus on 2012 as an eventful, if not fatal year.Let's take a look at them all and see if any theories seem troublesome enough to worry about.

Chapter 2 - The End of the Maya Calendar

The Maya is a Mesoamerican civilization which achieved a high degree of sophistication with the only known fully developed written language of the pre-Columbian Americas, as well as with its art, architecture, mathematical, religious, and astronomical systems. The civilization can be traced as far back as 2000 BC. Many Mayan cities reached their complete state of development between 250 A.D. and 900 A.D. Maya influence can be detected from Honduras, Guatemala, Northern El Salvador and to as far as central Mexico.Popular belief is that the Maya civilization suddenly and mysteriously disappeared sometime after 900 A.D.This runs counter to facts as it was likely the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in the 1500's and 1600's that led to a sharp decline in Mayan populations and influence. Still, the common public perception that the Mayan civilization suddenly disappeared adds fuel to the belief that the end of the Mayan Long Count calendar in 2012 marks the end of the world.

Mayan astronomers developed a sophisticated Long Count calendar with 5126 years completing the long count cycle. It is a fact that the end of the 5126 year cycle is believed to end on or about December 21,2012 that has led to the present speculation that the Mayan scientists, astronomers, and religious figures were predicting the end of the world.Actually, the end of the 5126 year cycle is just that, the end of one cycle and the beginning of another. The Mayans viewed the end of cycles as a cause for celebration, apparently believing that the human condition would somehow be improved with the beginning of each new cycle.

The public's misinterpretation of the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar is the basis for the belief that a cataclysm will take place on December 21, 2012. December 21, 2012 is simply the day that the calendar will go to the next b'ak'tun or cycle. Sandra Noble, executive director of the Mesoamerican research organization FAMSI, states that "for the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle". Ms. Noble considers the portrayal of December 2012 as a fatal doomsday or cosmic-shift event to be "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in." For example, the 2009 science fiction apocalyptic disaster film 2012 is based on this belief and frightened millions of people the world over. Certainly the movie placed visions of impending disaster in many minds and greatly expanded the belief that 2012 would be a horrifying year.

While believed by scientists that the end of the Mayan calendar poses no real threat it will probably be difficult for authorities to ease widespread public fears as December 21,2012 approaches. The Discovery TV channel has already aired a program detailing how survival shelter developement projects are already under way. One such project involves an outdated and obsolete Titan missile silo that a private developer has purchased from the United States government. The developer is converting the hardened missile silo into a survival condo project and is selling entire floors of the project for well in excess of one million dollars.

Apparently, interest has been high and the developer is well on his way to selling out the project. Recent disastrous events, like the recent earthquake and devastating tsunami that struck northeastern Japan in March 2011, helped those who have the necessary funds to make a decision to seek a survival shelter. With so many disturbing events taking place around the world in recent years, like the 2005 tsunami that killed more than 250,000 people in Indonesia and Thailand, and droughts and floods in so many areas of the world, those who can afford it are taking actions designed to save themselves and their families from disaster. While these people may not be fully convinced that 2012 will bring the end of the world as they know it they are concerned about the present trend of near apocalyptic events. If you have the money why take the chance no matter how small it might be? If the prophesies surrounding the end of the Maya calendar turn out to be true there will be no time to prepare once the world begins to shake, rattle and roll.
Chapter 3 - Bible Code Prophecy

In 1997 a former Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal reporter, confirmed agnostic Michael Drosnin, electrified the media world and the public by publishing a book with the title "The Bible Code". His book became an overnight best seller, remaining for 13 weeks on the N.Y times bestseller list and achieving brisk sales in nine countries. Michael Drosnin announced that he had discovered that a higher intelligence encoded the Hebrew Bible-with secret codes. In his book he made the case that these codes are so complex, so mathematically advanced, that it would be impossible for a human mind to have authored the code. The Bible codes reveal the names and events of the future.
