Foreword

Computer Society of India Kolkata Chapter organized the 2nd International Conference on Advanced Computing and Applications (ICACA 2021), during March 2728, 2021, and the conference theme is intelligent systems for IoT applications. Let me begin with intelligent systems and IoT.

I actually find the term intelligent systems somewhat amusing. Intelligent behavior displayed by several species is primarily centered around their ability to learn and to use the knowledge so gained to adjust their behavior for better adoption to the environment. Among machines invented by human species, only the programmable computers are able to possess such behavior. This has been possible due to the adaptive software which drives these machines. Exponentially growing applications of AI/ML have made this term commonplace in recent years, but the field of AI as such is quite old. Major advances in machine learning (ML) algorithms have been made, thanks to the very large amount of digital data that is now collected and is available for training these algorithms. These continuing developments have enabled us to apply AI/ML techniques in practically every walk of human activity. AI thus has a potential to positively impact human development in every sphere. It can disrupt the normal way in which most human beings live. Unfortunately, it also has a potential to cause harm. I shall speak about this dangerous possibility shortly, after briefly touching some aspects of IoT.
