PREMISE of This Book

No matter what you say and no matter how legitimate the reason why you were laid off or fired, future prospective employers frequently have it in their mind that they dont want to hire someone that another company has deemed not good enough to keep. If you answered, I was laid off, or I was fired, or similar words to that affect, then you just LOWERED your chances of an interview -- let alone a job! This book will help you respond to that dreaded interview question, Why did you leave that company?

This book will also help you answer other dreaded questions from future potential companies, and provide you with some tips on creating a successful resume.

You can LIE on your Job Application, Resume, and in Your Interview . You have to lie if you were fired or laid off. Companies just wont understand if you were say, I was terminated, I was fired, or I was laid off. While its easier today to explain a layoff, it is very difficult to explain being fired, also called terminated.

About the Author:

Stephen Page is an author of five books on policies and procedures (URL: http://www.companymanuals.com) ; White House Secrets (a novel), and Bridge Secrets and Tips (a work in progress). He has an MBA from UCLA and a variety of certifications. Among them:

MBA, UCLA

While interesting to know, none of this information makes Stephen an expert on how to deal with the challenge of landing that new job. However, Stephen DOES have expertise on this topic because of his own experiences. Stephen has held various positions throughout his lifetime. These include Records Manager, Policies and Procedures Manager and Writer, Communications Manager, Trainer, Speaker, Author, and various Consultant positions.

Stephen has learned the hard way how to answer all of the dreaded questions that are mentioned in this book. I made the wrong choice of words during several interviews and immediately got knocked out of competition --- when future employers heard me say, I was terminated or I was laid off I could see that the interviewers were not listening anymore. He wants to provide you the lessons he learned in the School of Hard Knocks, and pave the way for your success.

What he says in this book will not always hold true for everyone, but the information will prove to be highly useful for most readers. So even if you work for a government agency or are seeking a job with a government agency, you could still benefit from my advice.

A personal quote from the author : I am a very successful interviewee due to the kinds of information I offer in this book.

Chapter 1

Laid-Off versus Fired/Terminated
Definitions & Implications

You can LIE on your Job Application, Resume, and in Your Interview . You have to lie if you were fired or laid off. Companies just wont understand if you were say, I was terminated, I was fired, or I was laid off. While its easier today to explain a layoff, it is very difficult to explain being fired, also called terminated.

If you dont work for the Government or plan to get a job in Government, then you can often fabricate good answers for why you left a company instead if saying you are fired. For example, if you were fired, you could say that you had to quit to take care of very sick Grandmother or something along those lines. THERE IS NO WAY TO DISAPPROVE YOU. NO WAY.

Moving on to Definitions

In this chapter, we will discuss the impact and ramifications of being laid off (a.k.a. Down-sizing or Reduction in workforce) or fired/terminated from your job. We will also discuss ways for you to easily and confidently convey to your prospective employer why you left a company.

Secret Tip: Why you left a company should NEVER include the words, I was fired, I was terminated, and I was laid off, or words of a similar nature .

You were laid off

Being laid off is defined as: let go for reasons other than performance, e.g. the company was restructuring or having financial problems and eliminated the job. If the layoff is not just one individual and involves 50 or more people, you also may be a part of a planned mass layoff.

Employers will try to convince you that layoffs are not caused through any fault of the employees; but usually are due to a lack of work, cash, or material.

If you have never been laid off, the fact that your employer has decided to lay you off can be devastating (it was to me each and every time). However, you can start looking for a new job right away using the thoughts and ideas presented here.

There are benefits to being laid off. When you are laid off, you may be eligible for:

  • Unemployment Insurance (provided by the US Department of Labor)
  • Severance Packag e This package may include:
  • Extra weeks of pay based on how long you worked at the company
  • Extended medical/dental insurance
  • Payment for breaking a contract with an apartment lease, if you have one
  • You may be able to negotiate more. For example, moving expenses or a loss when selling your home can often be added to a severance package
  • COBRA medical insurance

Special Note : Employers are not always on the up and up with someone who is being laid off. Employers will sometimes lay someone off instead of firing the individual because they dont want a lawsuit -- especially if the real reason to get rid of you is because of your age, race, religion, or gender beliefs or just because they dont like you.

At the end of the day, employees are simply a resource for a company to use to get their product or service sold. I have seen so many employees who look up to their employers and are loyal. This is commendable, but the cruel fact is, business is business. When it comes time to let you go, employers dont care what happens to you after you leave.

Personal Experience: In 1999, one employer told me that I would be laid off immediately unless I stayed through 2000 for Y2K work --- I asked, Does that I mean that I keep my job after the Y2K work is done? They, surprisingly, said NO. As you can see, the company only wanted to keep me to get through Y2K, they didnt care about me. So I left immediately. Business is business. THEY only care about themselves and their business, NOT YOU.

You were Fired or Terminated

Being fired is defined as, Terminated usually for reasons of performance which can also include violations of written policies and procedures, e.g. fighting, stealing, lying on your resume about college degrees or certifications, insubordination, or drinking on the job.

Generally, when you are fired from a company, you are immediately escorted from the building and you are NOT eligible for any severance pay or benefits, other than being eligible for COBRA medical benefits and possibly Unemployment Insurance (a little known fact).

Be aware that in most of the states in the US, there is a clause in your initial employment contract (or paperwork) called, At-Will. At Will says, we can terminate you for any reason and we dont have to tell you why. Unfortunately, interviewees are on the short end of this stick because if they dont sign the contract, the company will not hire them.

There is a silver lining for these At-Will employment terms. Most large companies dont like to be the bad guy when they have to let you go; and will often create policies and procedures that outline disciplinary measures to take for employees with performance issues and then using these policies or procedures as the reason for the termination. For example, there might be a warning letter, followed by a second threatening letter, and finally a third letter to let you go.
