About the Technical Editor

Fred Wright, PhD, is recognized as an expert and researcher in cyber security. For the past two decades, he has focused on security issues and, in particular, the innovation gap between cyber threat capability and defensive technology. As a result, his research is focused on the most challenging problems in protecting enterprises. One example is critical data protection for large enterprises where robust, complex systems-engineering approaches are needed to address architecture, defensive solutions, security operations, and policy.

At Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), Fred founded a cyber security incubator, which led to the formation of a major business unit, the Cybersecurity, Information Protection, and Hardware Evaluation Research (CIPHER) Lab. His research focused on novel security architectures, risk assessments, and cyber situation awareness. Fred also focused on diversifying GTRIs research business into the commercial sector, including Fortune 500 companies and startups.

Fred also serves as an adjunct professor in the Georgia Tech School of Computer Science. He led the development of Georgia Techs Professional Education Cyber Security Certificate Program and is currently a lead instructor.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

This feels suspiciously like some televised award ceremony where the winner trots out a long list of everyone theyve ever known who contributed to their success. With a book, of course, there is no music to cue a more rapid wrap-up, but you are, of course, free to fast-forward to the next section if this is of no interest to you. Id like to acknowledge, as always, my terrific agent, Carole Jelen, who continues to take good care of me. Also, thanks to Wendy Rinaldi and Claire Yee for continuing to guide the process over many, many months.

INTRODUCTION

The difficulty with security is the number of areas it touches. These days, all you have to do is turn on the news and youll see at least one story indicating the importance of security. Whether its a major company losing a lot of data that affects their customers, or a governmental agency losing sensitive information, security can have a significant impact on many people. The GIAC Security Essentials (GSEC) certification attempts to address that issue with a test that covers a number of technical areas that security impacts.

SANS offers training courses to prepare individuals for the GSEC exam, though you can take the certification exam without attending a training course. In terms of the financials, the difference is that without taking the training, you will pay more to take the exam itself. For instance, youll pay a few hundred dollars more for the exam without the training, but well over a thousand dollars more with the training, and that doesnt include travel to the training location. It really comes down to how best you can learn the subject matter, and how much money you want to pay. In the end, the exam is still the exam, and youll have to know the same material either way. If you are motivated to do the work you need to do to absorb the lessons, you should be able to pass the exam without needing to take a week of training. If you need to be pushed and guided, you may do better doing the training before taking the exam.
