- Arundhati Virmani (EHESS, Marseilles) is a specialist in colonial and contemporary Indian history. Her work, since her PhD under the social historian Maurice Agulhon, reflects a cross-fertilization of perspectives, questions and approaches in the social sciences in Europe and Asia. Since her first publication on national symbolism in Past and Present (1999), she has extended her investigations of the historical, symbolic and political mechanisms and dynamics of nation building from colonial times to the present day. Her intellectual inquiries embrace reflections on how social scientists engage with the civic space. Some of her publications in French and English include: A National Flag for India. Rituals, Nationalism and the Politics of Sentiment, Delhi, Permanent Black 2008, 2nd ed. 2016; Atlas historique de lInde
