Like many books, this one has been a long time in the cooking. It had its origins in a meeting organized by the RICS that I attended in 2003 at which the significance of the challenge of making new urban development more sustainable was highlighted. After this I was fortunate to receive funding under the HEFCE Higher Education Initiatives Fund for a project on sustainable construction and design and planning in London, which ran from 2004 to 2006: thanks for Florian Lennert for that connection. I would specifically like to acknowledge the input of the amazing team on this project to my thinking about this issue: Urooj Amjad, Susan Moore, Michael Nye and Martine Spinks. Officers at the Greater London Authority and on our Project Steering Committee were also very helpful and I would particularly like to mention Jane Carlsen, Ian Cooper and Peter Head. Since then I was privileged to lead a group of colleagues on an Expert Panel for a Government Foresight project looking at sustainable energy management and the built environment. The discussions that we had over some two years were challenging, enlightening and enjoyable. I owe a debt of gratitude to them all: Patrick Devine-Wright, Simon Guy, Lester Hunt, John Loughhead, Lorna Walker and Jim Watson. I would also like to mention the Foresight project team, particularly Jane Mardell and Jo Marsden. Most of the work on this book was done since I moved to the Bartlett School of Planning at University College London. I wish to thank all my colleagues here and in the UCL Environment Institute for generating a stimulating and collegial environment in which to work. In particular, I thank Nikos Karadimitriou, Susan Moore and Martine Spinks for taking the time out of their busy schedules to read a draft of various chapters. Earthscan has been a great publisher to work with and thanks to the team: Nicki Dennis, Claire Lamont, Lee Rourke and Rob West (now on his travels). Finally thanks to Ellie Myerson for redrawing all the figures. Of course, all responsibility for errors, omissions and misunderstandings rests with me. No acknowledgements for me would be complete without sending my thanks and love to George, Simon and Ellie.
