Magic: The Gathering
takes place across a vast multiverse of diverse
planes of existence. Over the decades of its life,
Magic
has developed
a wide array of those planes, evolving into a multimedia franchise
with a genre-spanning range.
When the creative team behind
Magic
s art and lore began building
new worlds to explore, they sought new ways to resonate with fans
outside of traditional fantasy and created new planeswalker charac-
ters to connect the multiverse. The origin of these creative endeavors
varysome planes are built around the mechanics of the card set
for which theyre being designed, while other sets establish a core
theme and cards and mechanics are designed around that concept.
These design approaches are known as bottom-up and top-down,
respectively.
Top-down design instantly resonates with fans familiar with the
source material, whether its fairy-tale-themed Eldraine or the giant
monsters of Ikoria, inspired by film icons like Godzilla. The gothic-
horror-inspired Innistrad takes the classic monsters of early cinema
and builds a world where humanity struggles against werewolves,

Frankenstein. Theros, Amonkhet, and Kaldheim take inspiration from
classical mythology, building worlds around Greek, Egyptian, and
Norse mythology, respectively, down to homages to their various
gods. These worlds are at once familiar and fantastical, putting a
unique
Magic
twist on the genre.
Bottom-up designs are no less resonant, building worlds from
the core of
Magic
s identitythe flavorful implementation of game
mechanics. That unique intersection is where
Magic
s worldbuilders
often shine brightest. The guilds of Ravnica began as a way to explain
ten multicolor factions, but have evolved into an element of the lore
so beloved, almost every
Magic
player claims one or more of them
as part of their own identity. Players even use the guild names as
shorthand for the color combinations the guilds represent. Adventure
and exploration matter on Zendikar because lands matter in the set.
As
Magic: The Gathering
continues to expand into new realms,
including an animated series on the popular streaming service Netflix,
I hope youll take the time to walk the planes with me in this illus-
trated guide. Covered in these pages is the core worldbuilding of over
a dozen planes... and the planeswalkers who call those planes home.

Magic: The Gathering
s worlds, called planes, are part of a vast multi-
verse as varied as it is dangerous. Each plane is distinct from all others,
separated by a mystical veil called the Blind Eternities. There are
beings capable of traveling the Blind Eternities, called planeswalkers,
each of whom carries an imprint of the Blind Eternities on their soul.
That imprint is called a spark, and for most it lies dormant their entire
lives. A planeswalkers spark will ignite in a moment of extreme emo-
tion: the stress of a near-death experience, the transcendent joy of
achieving ones deepest desire, the deep grief derived from the loss
of a loved one taken before their time. In that transcendent moment,
the barriers between realms fall and planeswalkers are flung across
the multiverse for the first time. The Gatewatch, a group of interplanar
heroes, were united by the need to defend planes from extraplanar
threats, whether they be other planeswalkers or eldritch beings.
Magic: The Gathering
spent much of its early years on a plane
known as Dominaria, from the very first set,
