Introduction
Algeria is a fascinating country with a long, diverse, and rich history that has yet to be discovered by many readers in the United States. The countrys recent history has been turbulent. From the painful war of independence from the French to a decade of troubles. This publication demonstrates the resilience of the Algerian people. Algeria is a mosaic of ethnicities from diverse horizons, but all founded upon the first Berber and the kingdom of Numidia and its Roman presence. This identity was made complete later by the Arab conquest and Islamization of the region where Judaism and Christianity preceded. Then, the region became an Ottoman Empire stronghold until 1830, by which time the French invasion brought 132 of colonization, until Algeria finally regained its freedom in 1962, completing the contemporary Algerian identity.
Algerias first transatlantic relations began in the 16th century with the first skirmishes between the corsairs of the Algiers Regency and North American traders who ventured into the Mediterranean Sea. This pushed the United States to invest in the beginnings of todays US Navy with the construction of the Constellation, a near-mythical ship stationed today in the Baltimore harbor. Relations between the two countries evolved across centuries, from Algerias recognition of US independence to Algerias key role in freeing US diplomats from the Iran hostage crisis, culminating in Algerias role in fighting the war on terror beginning on September 11, 2001a sad date where the United States was struck by the same ignominy and barbarism of Islamic fundamentalists that Algeria had fought on its own for a whole decade as of 1990, paying a hefty price to build its young democracy.
