JUDIT KIMPIAN, HATTIE HARTMAN AND SOFIE PELSMAKERS
Keynsham Civic Centre, Keynsham, AHR.
This book stands on the shoulders of work by several key individuals and organisations.
For their part in the research underpinning this book we would like to especially thank: AHR for publicly sharing lessons learned from R&D work carried out between 2006-2016; for the support of AHRs board and marketing team, as well as the project architects who undertook research on live projects with outstanding results.
Peter Oborn for his enduring support and guidance; for paving the way for embedding research in practice; for his deep interest in this work and his ongoing persuasion of industry decision makers to recognise the value of building performance feedback.
Harry Bruhns, Bill Bordass, John Field, Rob Cohen and Hywel Davies for all the mentoring; for their role in identifying the performance gap; for sharing their insights on the importance of tracking data over a buildings lifespan and much more.
Professor Dejan Mumovic for his passion for engaging industry with academic research and for championing the studies that inform this book.
Dr Esfandiar Burman, for sharing his ground-breaking building performance research and evaluations of AHR buildings; for his insights into the complex causes of the performance gap and for his in-depth review of chapters 7 and 8.
UCL/AHR PhD/EngD researchers for their excellent work on AHR/UCL research projects: Dr Craig Robertson, Dr Greig Paterson, and Jamie Bull.
AHR R&D team: Dan Rigamonti for pulling out all the stops to make research relevant to practitioners and apply the results; Sophie Chisholm for her excellent work on AHR's BPE projects and CarbonBuzz; Josh Mason for the inspiration to substantiate the term 'sustainable' with evidence.
Gary Clark and the RIBA Sustainable Futures Group for spearheading the RIBA Climate Challenge that has transformed industry discourse in a few short months.
Colleagues at the Architects' Council of Europe for enthusiastically embracing the policy implications of building performance research.
UKRI for funding Building Performance Research to highlight the critical impact of the performance gap.
In addition, we would like to thank:
The practices and clients who went above and beyond to supply the supporting evidence and images for the case studies by responding to our endless questions: Dr Craig Robertson, AHMM; Christian Dimbleby and Gareth Selby, Architype; Sarah Lewis, Hansom Barron Smith; Steve Tompkins, Will Mesher and Diana Dina, Haworth Tompkins; Adam Spall, AHR, Dr Esfandiar Burman, UCL, Alasdair Donn, Willmott Dixon, Tamsin Tweddell Max Fordham, and Jeff Tatum, Bath & NE Somerset Council; Alasdair Donn, Willmott Dixon, Jakob Strmann-Andersen + Imke Wies van Mil, Henning Larsen; Bailey Thompson, ZGF Architects, Robert Longthorne, Everyman Theatre, and Kelly Vaughn and Joey Cathcart, Rocky Mountain Institute.

Tampere University for co-sponsoring the supporting us throughout the evolution of this book. graphic design of the diagrams. RIBA Publishing for supporting us throughout the evolution of this book.
This book had a long gestation and we are immensely grateful to our partners for keeping us sane. Special thanks to Federico Calboli for a massive editing job during the final push and for help with references; to Alasdair McPhail for his insights into the important role of UX in product design and its absence in architecture, as well as help with 3D cutaway sections.
JK, HH and SP
Architect and environmental policy expert Judit Kimpian chairs the Architects Council of Europes (ACE) Sustainable Architecture Group, where she leads a campaign to reform EU legislation to deliver a net zero built environment by campaigning for revision of EU policy, directives and standards.
During 20 years in practice, including five years as Director of Sustainable Architecture and Research at AHR, Judit was responsible for the realisation of award-winning international design projects. She also led collaborative research, bringing together industry and academic partners to tackle the gap between the expected and achieved performance of buildings, and undertook numerous performance studies of completed buildings in use.
The insights she gained into the impact of feedback on design outcomes led her to engage stakeholders across the construction sector to benchmark and share performance data and lessons learned in the public domain. Her work has informed the development of CIBSE and RIBA online tools and technical guidance. Judit teaches energy efficient architecture and planning at UCL and supports organisations with embedding feedback in policy, design and construction. She regularly contributes to professional publications and is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences.
Journalist and author Hattie Hartman is sustainability editor at the Architects Journal, London. Raised in America and trained as an architect and urban planner at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she has lived in London since 1991. After 15 years in practice, serendipity and the opportunity to interview Oscar Niemeyer led her into journalism.
