While the war between the kingdoms grows, the long-forgotten gods are beginning to take notice. And one of them has been waiting for this moment for a very long time...

Malory has survived betrayal, an assassination attempt, and the Battle of Allondale. But months later, with the Unified Kingdoms at war, she is a queen in name only. All she rules is in ruins and her enemies wont stop until she and Jamis are dead and their lands claimed.

Hidden deep in the forested Argralands, Maloryalong with Jamis, Kennard, Katherine, Josef, and Isobelhas been systematically raiding the resources of Roarke and his allies. As Malory and Jamis work to bolster their troops so they can finally conquer their enemies, a new threat emerges that leaves all the kingdoms at risk. But ever-shifting alliances and a broken unification leave Malory questioning loyaltieseven among those closest to her. Can Malory build her armies before a devastating loss brings her to the brink of her own ruin?

Queen of the Ruins picks up seamlessly where The High Crown Chronicles left off and draws the reader more deeply into this world of stunning imagery, dynamic characters, and shifting political alliances. A blend of dark, vengeful tone and deeply emotional moments will draw readers through this action-packed novel and leave their hearts thundering until the final page.

The Gods

Omnilus

The original breath in the universes. The great creator.

Creator of the world and the gods. Recognized the gods had too much power which would lead to destruction, so he removed their ability to create life then turned his back on the world hed created, retreating into the heavens to create a new utopia.

The Elyphesian Gods

Rvolo: God of the earth, virility, and aggression.

When man turned against the gods, it was Rvolo who caused the ground to shake, bringing down the castles of the kings who had betrayed the gods and the remainder of the monuments that had been destroyed by man. Was tricked by Nemii into shaking the earth again, causing the gates of Targatheimr to collapse, trapping the godlings in the underworld forever. Nemii offered to let him be the god of the earth, but Rvolo grew tired of the fighting among his brethren and retreated into Elyphesus to exist in solitude.

Lirmor: God of the sea, passion and strategy.

Lured seaside maidens into being his lover and fathered more godlings than any other god. Loved the goddess Whenorrga and watched the heavens for her to pass over his waters. He grew angry when she grew to favor Kbialus. In his anger, he caused great waves to swell, which capsized ships and drowned 300 sailors. Nemii convinced him the only way to win Whenorrgas affection was to prove himself the better warrior. Lirmor aligned with Nemii in the war between gods and men, but when his godlings were lured into Targatheimr, Lirmor threatened to swell the oceans to drown out humans in retribution.

Nemii offered Lirmor to become the god of the earth, but Lirmor retreated to the sea, where he periodically mourns the empty sky above him and tosses the sea in his anger.

Kbialus: God of force, compulsion, soldiers, and determination.

Loves only himself and war. Kbialus awards armies for their ferocity in battle and for their thirst for vengeance. Is favored by Whennorga for his fierceness in war. Kbialus split the earth so water could flow across the land, carrying soldiers in great ships inland. Whenorrga mistook this as an offering to her, as proof of his love. Kbialus tempted Whenorrga to ensure her strong winds to help his warriors in battle, but he angered her by also courting the goddess Albati.

Whenorrga: Goddess of the night winds, of the swift-footed, of speed, and protector of sailors.

Whenorrga favored Kbialus over Lirmor. When Lirmors anger caused 300 sailors to drown in his seas, the winds that resulted from Whenorrgas fury increased the waves resulting in the death of 3,000 sailors. As a result, Whenorrga was the first god that men turned against.

Nemii: The god of opposition, duplicity, of the sun and the moon, of avarice.

Nemii became envious of the esteem his brother and sister gods were held in. Was responsible for the human uprising. He conspired with both men and gods to establish a dominion over the world but honored his promises to none. He once loved and admired Nithenia above all others and wanted her at his side.

Nithenia: Goddess of bravery, victory, and protector of women and children.

Was favored by Omnilus, the Great Creator, which caused great envy among her brother and sister gods. Favors Lirmor among the gods and recognizes his actions to be the result of an impulsive mistake. Takes other shapes and walks the earth, has taken great warriors as lovers and borne many godlings. Stood against the other gods to protect humankind.

Albati: Goddess of love, of ill-fated lovers, of alliances, and of mercy.

Created from the essence of all the gods and from love. Fell in love with a mortal and bore him a godling daughter. Was tricked into aligning with Nemii in exchange for the promise that her lover would be released from the underworld and allowed eternal entry into Elyphesus.

The blood of the false kings will spill upon the earth, nourishing seeds of betrayal. Those who reap power from its cursed abundance and trample upon the legacy of Elyphesia will unleas the fury of the gods. The gates of Targatheimr will burst open and fiery steeds will storm across the earth. A kingdom of darkness will prevail, and it alone shall be blessed by the gods.

~Elyphesian Prophecy

And the heavens boomed and the gods of Elyphesus commanded, Call forth and we shall answer. Whosoever amongst you that is just, let the gods be your army. Yet no man called, for they were filled with fear and the dark descended.

~From The War of Gods and Men

For everyone who has ever dusted themselves off and soldiered on.

Chapter One

I t looks so pretty, Katherine whispers, tilting her face toward the night sky.

From the dark, off to my side, Kennard growls. Itll be a beautiful death if you dont quit your gawking and pay attention.

Snow drifts from the feathered clouds, landing on us as we lie on our bellies atop a high hill surveying the landscape below. Lilting bits of white fleece dance about as they make their long journey from the slate sky above to the surface of the winter-crisp earth. As a girl, I celebrated every new snowfall, running into the courtyard to stare in wonderment as the miraculous fluff flitted down to kiss my tiny nose and cover Devlishireand the entirety of the worldin a blanket of serenity.

How fleeting peaceand the memory of ittruly is.

There. Jamis points to the rise of a hill forty yards from where we lie. Hes beside me, pressed into my side to keep meand himself Im surewarm against the frigid night. The snow beneath me has melted, the moisture creeping through my cloak, into my dress, and even into the breeches beneath it. My body is doing its best to warm me and the earth upon which Ive been prone for over an hour.

I squint against the falling flakes, my gaze straining in the direction Jamis points. An orange glow lights the valley behind a hill, illuminating the lands subtle rise and casting undulating shadows on the surrounding land.

Idiots, Josef whispers harshly from my other side. Dont they know nothin bout war

I smile at the fact that, until three months ago, none of us knew anything about war. A year ago, I was a nave princess sent to marry the most powerful man in the Unified Kingdoms. But after being betrayed by my father, brother, and their allies, I know far more of combat than most men twice my age.

I study the hill, watching for the shadows of people to move across the glow of the campfire. My ears strain to pick up sounds of camp. Throughout the Unified Kingdoms, battles are being waged daily. A band of knights would make quite a clatter as they shed their armor and weapons, recovered their horses, and settled into rest. Even a group of peasants would make noise, but there is nothing. Only the glow of a fire. A beacon to give away the unsuspecting people who might be gathered around it.
