This book is dedicated to the memory of my mother, Jacquelyn Phillips, who loved and supported me with every fiber of her being every day of her life. With the publication of this book, she will finally get the satisfaction of knowing that it is abundantly clear to all that a radiologist is a real medical doctor!
If there is a book you want to read but it has not been written yet, then you must write it.

IT IS WITH great pleasure and admiration that I write this foreword and serve as editor for Dr. Connie Jones superb overview of mammography and related tests for breast cancer detection used in radiology. Dr. Jones brings a rare and complimentary combination of excellent training, extensive practical experience, and the skills to mold complex medical issues into an easily understandable narrative.
As a fellow radiologist who has practiced breast imaging as my specialty for 30 years primarily in a nonacademic setting, I appreciate Dr. Jones ability to bring all the important issues surrounding the complicated and often controversial subjects we confront in breast imaging to light, including how a mammogram is performed and interpreted, when mammography should or should not be performed, what imaging tests are performed to supplement the mammogram and when they are applied, what happens when breast cancer is suspected on a mammogram, and what the next steps are if a cancer is found. She provides a lucid guide for women everywhere so that the true lifesaving value of breast imaging can be not only appreciated, but fully understood.
Dr. Jones fills a critical void in the medical world. For the first time, women have a friend and guide to take with them on their journey through the health care system in terms they can understand, a journey that may conclude by saving their lives.
I applaud Dr. Jones and thank her for taking time from her busy practice to present us with this marvelous medical gift. It is a gift that comes from the heart, out of her passion for her work and her compassion for the patients she serves. Bravo, Dr. Jones!

THE CONCEPT AND compilation of this book has been many years in the making. As a practicing physician for over 20 years I decided to write this book because I was frustrated by the many misconceptions my patients had about the breast imaging process and I was disheartened that I could never find an appropriate book to recommend to them. So, I decided to write this bookfor them.
Firstly, I would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank the brilliant radiologists and researchers in the field of Breast Imaging. Their contribution has been paramount to the development of this book. And without their diligence and hard work there would be no such thing as Breast Radiology as a subspecialty. Their work is the basis for my knowledge of the subject matter in this book.
The content and conclusions derived in the book were developed over the many years of my medical practice as a dedicated Breast Imaging Radiologist in a community practice setting. So, while there are some citations the opinions in the text are mine based on years of experience and encounters with thousands of patients and referring physicians and assessing literally thousands of images. If I have failed to cite an appropriate source, I am truly sorry.
I am honored and very grateful to have the input and editorial assistance of Dr. Michael Linver for this book. He has been a superb mentor and a good friend. As an experienced Breast Radiologist and nationally and internationally recognized educator his experience and insight were invaluable to assuring that the material in the book was relevant and accurate. His contribution to the chapters on the screening controversy, dense breast discussion, medical legal and safety issues in mammography were invaluable. His wife Mina Jo (an amazing person in her own right) was also instrumental in giving me strategies to secure publication and market visibility. Mike and Mina Jo your support has been critical to the success of this endeavor. Thank you.
