A Note from the Petersons Editors

The six volumes of Petersons Graduate and Professional Programs, the only annually updated reference work of its kind, provide wideranging information on the graduate and professional programs offered by accredited colleges and universities in the United States, U.S. territories, and Canada and by those institutions outside the United States that are accredited by U.S. accrediting bodies. More than 37,000 individual academic and professional programs at nearly 2,400 institutions are listed. Petersons Graduate and Professional Programs have been used for more than forty years by prospective graduate and professional students, placement counselors, faculty advisers, and all others interested in postbaccalaureate education.

Graduate & Professional Programs: An Overview contains information on institutions as a whole, while the other books in the series are devoted to specific academic and professional fields:

Graduate Programs in the Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences

Graduate Programs in the Biological Sciences

Graduate Programs in the Physical Sciences, Mathematics,Agricultural Sciences, the Environment & Natural Resources

Graduate Programs in Engineering & Applied Sciences

Graduate Programs in Business, Education, Health, InformationStudies, Law & Social Work

The books may be used individually or as a set. For example, if you have chosen a field of study but do not know what institution you want to attend or if you have a college or university in mind but have not chosen an academic field of study, it is best to begin with the Overview guide.

Graduate & Professional Programs: An Overview presents several directories to help you identify programs of study that might interest you; you can then research those programs further in the other books in the series by using the Directory of Graduate and Professional Programs by Field, which lists 500 fields and gives the names of those institutions that offer graduate degree programs in each.

For geographical or financial reasons, you may be interested in attending a particular institution and will want to know what it has to offer. You should turn to the Directory of Institutions and Their Offerings, which lists the degree programs available at each institution. As in the Directory of Graduate and Professional Programs by Field, the level of degrees offered is also indicated.

All books in the series include advice on graduate education, including topics such as admissions tests, financial aid, and accreditation. The Graduate Adviser includes two essays and information about accreditation. The first essay, The Admissions Process, discusses general admission requirements, admission tests, factors to consider when selecting a graduate school or program, when and how to apply, and how admission decisions are made. Special information for international students and tips for minority students are also included. The second essay, Financial Support, is an overview of the broad range of support available at the graduate level. Fellowships, scholarships, and grants; assistantships and internships; federal and private loan programs, as well as Federal Work-Study; and the GI bill are detailed. This essay concludes with advice on applying for need-based financial aid. Accreditation and Accrediting Agencies gives information on accreditation and its purpose and lists institutional accrediting agencies first and then specialized accrediting agencies relevant to each volumes specific fields of study.

With information on more than 37,000 graduate programs in 500 disciplines, Petersons Graduate and Professional Programs give you all the information you need about the programs that are of interest to you in three formats: Profiles (capsule summaries of basic information), Displays (information that an institution or program wants to emphasize), and Close-Ups (written by administrators, with more expansive information than the Profiles, emphasizing different aspects of the programs). By using these various formats of program information, coupled with Appendixes and Indexes covering directories and subject areas for all six books, you will find that these guides provide the most comprehensive, accurate, and up-to-date graduate study information available.
