Defining Body Dysmorphic Disorder
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) was initially identified in the 1800s by Enrico Morselli, an Italian physician. Very little information existed about BDD in the psychiatric literature until more than one hundred years later. Since then, thanks to a small group of very dedicated researchers, we can confidently identify and treat it successfully. Mental health professionals define body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) as a preoccupation with a perceived or minor flaw in appearance. If a minor flaw does exist, the amount of distress it causes is above and beyond what might normally be expected. The preoccupation leads to a significant degree of distress and interference in daily life. If you have BDD, you are likely to avoid certain situations that make you anxious, such as being seen in a bathing suit or talking close up to someone. Well go into detail in the next few chapters about the types of situations most people avoid and why. When youre not avoiding, you may try to hide the part of your body that you feel uncomfortable with. For example, you may wear a cap to hide your hairline or you may use makeup to hide your blemishes. Although facial features are the most commonly targeted area, any body part can be the focus.
