Introduction to Library Research in German Studies: Language, Literature, and Civilization
Larry L. Richardson
This book will help students of German language, literature, and civilization to develop their skills in using the resources and services of college and university libraries. Not restricted to the traditional study of German language and literature, the book also guides the student over the bibliographic terrain of German history; prehistory and folklore; philosophy and religion; and art, music, and cinema.
Dr. Richardson begins with a practical overview of bibliographic access systems--catalogs, indexes, abstracts, and bibliographies--and of basic search strategies for effective library research, An annotated bibliography, the largest section of the book, describes the most important research tools in German studies, as well as representative examples of specialized resources needed by the advanced scholar. The book concludes with a review of supplementary resources, including books about German reference works, books on how to write research papers, and data bases for computerized literature searches. Appendixes list library classification systems and subject headings for German studies.
Larry L. Richardson is assistant librarian and head of library instruction, Arizona State University. He holds graduate degrees in both German studies and library science and is the author of Committed Aestheticism: The Poetic Theory and Practice of G nter Eich (forthcoming) .

Guide
Students at the advanced undergraduate or graduate level have generally consulted Hansel's venerable B cherkunde f r Germanisten or the more recent Faulhaber/ Goff reference guide to German literature. Here and abroad, however, the field of Germanistik , the study of German language and literature, has expanded in an interdisciplinary age to include related fields: history, folklore, religion, art, politics, cinema, and so on. This fact is reflected in the rebaptism of some major university departments to include the phrase "German studies." Until now the advanced student of German studies has found in single bibliographic guides a range of scholarship limited to the traditional area. The present volume not only addresses the broader demands of contemporary scholarly activity, but also introduces German ists to the mechanics and methodology of modern library research.
This book guides the library user, clearly and precisely, through the entire process of research. It explains the use of various bibliographic access systems, providing step-by-step search strategies using every resource from traditional indexes, abstracts, and bibliographies to the most modern computerized data bases for the whole field of German studies. The most obvious beneficiaries of this resource are those students concerned with bibliographical completeness for their own work, whether that be a senior thesis or a dissertation. However, even well-established faculty with considerable research expertise will find in this volume a wealth of information that not only assures them of a complete search, but also informs them of scholarly resources in allied fields. Undergraduate work-study students performing research for faculty will also quickly find a friend in this book; for search procedures are carefully outlined, including the most modern computerized access tools, probably still unfamiliar to a large number of Germamsts. Finally, the concise annotations accompanying each entry will enable all users, at all levels, to focus their bibliographic searches with skill and precision.

Linfield College
This guide is a practical introduction to library research in German studies, designed to meet the needs of German majors, both undergraduate and graduate students, who desire to develop their skills in using the resources and services of college and university libraries. Not restricted to the traditional study of German language and literature, this research guide also includes the interdisciplinary study of German civilization. identifies supplementary reference guides for further consultation and study.
The primary criterion for selecting reference books for annotation in was practicality. Books were included if they were useful for most students of German studies who conducted research in American or Canadian libraries. Many books, including some standard bibliographies relating to German studies, were omitted if they were not necessary for the typical research assignment or even for the typical dissertation.
The reference books chosen for inclusion in fall into one or more of three categories:
  • (1) standard reference works on or relating to German studies that most students of German culture will need to use;
