The ethics of the global environment: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "The ethics of the global environment" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

This volume concerns itself with the ethical principles and concepts relating to the environment: nature, resources and the planet. This is placed in the context of ethical theory, and consideration is given to the way these values have transformed received ethical traditions. Issues include the intrinsic value of nonhuman species, obligations to future generations, and the aesthetic needs of humanity. Both the universal responsibilities and their application are investigated. The international responsibilities to the planet are seen in the context of some of the most alarming future scenarios: limited access to water, the changing global climate, population explosion, the destruction of ecosystems, and even the extinction of humanity.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I should like to thank the following for their helpful suggestions concerning the text of this work: David Attfield, Nigel Dower, Markku Oksanen, Neil Thomas, and an anonymous referee of Edinburgh University Press, and also the Oxford Centre for Environment, Ethics and Society, to a Seminar of which most of Chapter 3 was presented. Seminars of the Global Citizenship Project of the University of Aberdeen Centre for Philosophy, Technology and Society proved influential in the composition of Chapter 11. But responsibility for the final text and its shortcomings remains my own.
I am most grateful to Robin Wackerbarth for his assiduous checking of successive drafts, and for his earlier contributions to a customised database, ingeniously devised by Leela Dutt, and also to Mary Jo Slazak of Rowman & Littlefield and to the Library staff of University of Wales Cardiff, and in particular to Tom Dawkes, for invaluable bibliographical assistance. Thanks are further due to University of Wales Cardiff for releasing me from other duties for one Semester to complete this work, and also to my colleagues of the Philosophy Section for undertaking those duties. Above all, thanks are due to my wife, Leela Dutt, without whom this work would not have been begun, continued or completed.
