About the Authors
Eliane Kurbegov is from Strasbourg, France. She has been teaching French in high schools and universities in both Florida and Colorado throughout her career. As a high school teacher, she began consulting for the College Board: leading workshops, writing test items for the AP French exam, creating materials for AP workshop manuals, and participating in the exam and course redesign in 2011. She has scored AP exams as a reader, table leader, and question leader for over twenty years. In addition, Eliane has trained and mentored AP consultants and is currently monitoring the AP French Language and Culture Course Teacher Community. She is the author of numerous French manuals published by Barrons and McGraw Hill, as well as the author of French for Dummies and co-author of the AP French textbook Thmes published by Vista Higher Learning.
Ed Weiss has spent his career teaching French at both the high school and college levels in the Philadelphia area, as well as serving as World Language department chair at the secondary level. Ed has worked for the College Board for over twenty years and has served as an AP reader, table leader, and exam leader for the AP French Language and Culture exam. Ed is a national consultant for the College Board and has led Advanced Placement Summer Institutes for French teachers around the country. He has also developed workshop and online materials for the College Board. He is a three-time recipient of National Endowment for the Humanities summer institute grants and has been a presenter for ACTFL, AATF, and at the AP French reading. He is a co-author of levels one and four of the Wayside Publications French series EntreCultures.
Table of Contents
The purpose of this book is to provide you with the best possible preparation for the AP French Language and Culture exam. Using the tools included in this book will help prepare you for success on exam day.
Exam Overview
Read this section first to learn all about the format on the test, the types of questions you are going to be asked, the types of sources you will encounter, and what the different sections of the exam will require you to do. A discussion of how the test is scored is also included to give you an idea of what the scorers will be looking for in your responses.
Review and Practice
Next, move on to the review chapters, where you will find extensive practice and commentary for each part of the exam. The more practice you have with answering these AP-type questions, the better prepared you will be on test day.
Practice Tests
At the end of the book we included two full-length practice exams. Keep in mind that taking a practice exam under actual testing conditions (all at once and within the time limit) is always best. Every exam includes an explanation of the correct answers as well as an Score Analysis Sheet.
Online Practice
In addition to the two practice tests within this book, there is also one full-length online practice exam. You may take this exam in practice (untimed) mode or in timed mode. All questions include answer explanations. The audio for all listening practice is also included online. All listening practice is spoken by native French speakers and represents a variety of sources.
For Students
The organization of this book is designed to take you through each section of the exam, allowing for ample practice in mastering each type of question. By answering the review questions and by taking the practice tests, you will have an indication of how well you will do on the actual exam.
For Teachers
Suggest to your students that they use this book along with their course materials for added practice. When used in tandem with classroom assignments, this book should offer your students the opportunity to use the material to reinforce classroom learning.
As you work toward achieving that on your AP French Language and Culture exam, here are five essentials that you MUST know above everything else:
| Familiarize yourself with the exam structure, the six themes, and the three modes of communication around which the course is structured. Understanding the various tasks in the exam is critical for success. Remember that communication can be interpersonal, interpretive, or presentational. All of the tasks in the exam are built upon these modes. Your success depends on a balanced mastery of language. |
| Listen and read critically. You will need to comprehend a variety of authentic French texts, letters, articles, conversations, interviews, and other items such as maps, charts, and instructions. Be able to understand the purpose, the essential facts, and the tone of each of these items. |
| Immerse yourself in authentic materials. The AP French exam is based on real-world materials. Your success on the test depends on how well you can interact with these selections. Remember that this is the AP French Language and Culture examyour exposure to authentic materials increases your cultural knowledge. Constantly immerse yourself in French by taking advantage of the myriad of online resources along with texts and magazines. |
| Write and speak in both formal and informal registers. Knowing how to deal with the two writing and the two speaking tasks that require both registers is a key to your success. Know how to write an effective and well-organized essay that cites three different sources. Know how to respond to an email with appropriate salutations. Be able to engage in an informal conversation. Finally, know how to make an oral presentation in which you compare your own community with a francophone community on a specific aspect of culture. |
| Continue your practice right up to exam day. Staying sharp by continued exposure to French is critical! By using all of the elements of this guide, including the two complete sample exams and models of written and spoken responses, you will go into the exam confident. On exam day, be completely familiar with all exam directions. |
