I was pleased to welcome Moira Jacobs into the Williamsburg Chapter NSDAR in October 2013, shortly after I assumed the office of Chapter Regent. Moira, a California resident for 22 years, transferred from the El Palo Alto Chapter in California. We soon learned she was a published author having recently published, in 2013, the introduction and history of the El Palo Alto Chapter celebrating the Chapters 100 th Anniversary. The book is a compilation of biographies of American Revolutionary War patriots written by the chapter members.
How delighted we were to learn that she would consider a similar book for us! And how appropriate that it would be scheduled to publish during the 125 th Anniversary of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution! As some ladies began the process of choosing which patriot to profile, others began research to learn more about their patriot. What fun it was for me personally to find a treasure trove of newsletters called the Deerpark Diary. They were published in the Deerpark Historian Office in Huguenot, NY, and featured many articles about my patriot and his family all new information to me!
Our book is a wonderful keepsake for all of us and a great way to honor and preserve the history of our patriots. The stories are all different, some heavily researched and documented while others are family histories passed down verbally through many generations.
We are honored to have Moira as a member of our chapter. She holds a BA in History from Rutgers and earned her Masters in International Political Economy from Columbia University, but her love of history from earliest childhood, provides her passion for these books. We owe her deep gratitude for her encouragement to sit down and write, for her patience with our questions and the time we took to respond, and for this completed edition of Profiles of Patriots that will live in the libraries of our families forever. Thank you Moira.

Preface
By Moira Jacobs
The Williamsburg Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) was founded in 1925 by Organizing Regent Mrs. Littleberry Foster and 26 Charter members. Williamsburg holds a very special place in the history of the United States as it was a major center of thought leaders and significant political events throughout the period of the American Revolution. Nearby is the site of the Battle of Yorktown, the final decisive military victory of the American Revolution in 1781. The surrounding areas around both Williamsburg and Yorktown include many precious historical sites, such as Jamestown, in addition to the beautifully preserved original Capitol of Virginia in Williamsburg proper. It is no wonder this area continues to attract so many who call it their home today, including a civic minded group of ladies of the Williamsburg Chapter of the DAR who continue to carry the torch first lit by Mrs. Littleberry Foster in 1925.
Today the Williamsburg Chapter of the DAR boasts over 280 members as of this writing, and is very active in the community in support of the mission of the National Society of the DAR.
The National Society describes its origin and mission best:
The DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a non-profit, non-political volunteer womens service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing Americas future through better education for children.
DAR members volunteer millions of service hours annually in their local communities including supporting active duty military personnel and assisting veteran patients, awarding thousands of dollars in scholarships and financial aid each year to students, and supporting schools for underserved children with annual donations exceeding one million dollars.
As one of the most inclusive genealogical societies in the country, DAR boasts 180,000 members in 3,000 chapters across the United States and internationally. Any woman 18 years or older-regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background-who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution, is eligible for membership.
This book is part of an ongoing endeavor to collect, compile and preserve biographies of Revolutionary War patriots written by their descendants, contributing to one of the focus areas of the DAR which is preserving American history.
This collection of biographies is uniquely special as they are provided by an outstanding group of women leaders of the Williamsburg, VA chapter, all very dedicated to the mission of the DAR and service to their community. Their dedication and passion for preserving their patriot ancestors stories provides us with an especially valuable source of history. These biographies provide unique perspectives of these patriots from their descendants genealogical research. They include references derived from family documents, letters, official records and images, some of which are from family collections handed down over generations, making these valuable new primary sources for other genealogical researchers.
