My family for supporting me with love.

Aerie and I are guide dogs for our blind owners, Juliet and Shawn. As working guides, our job is to lead them safely from place to place. We take our jobs very seriously, but we always seem to find fun. Exciting adventures follow us wherever we gofrom surfing the waves in San Diego to hiding from a crazy Chihuahua in the subways of New York City.

Because we are guide dogs, Aerie and I are allowed to travel in airplanes, trains, buses, and taxis. However, we have to follow a strict set of rules, especially when traveling on airplanes. We have to show our guide dog IDs, be checked by security just like humans, and be on our best behavior. Because we did such a good job traveling to and from and all around New York City, it came as no surprise when Juliet and Shawn decided that they wanted to take another vacation. This time, we were heading to a place called Washington DC. I had never heard of it, but Shawn did say a lot about these things called monuments. I had never heard of those either, but I liked the way he made them sound like something important and worth seeing.

CHAPTER 1
Touch Down in Washington DC

I knew we had arrived when a big thump woke me up from my snooze. We took an overnight flight, so after greeting the flight attendants and crunching on some ice, I slept long and comfortably, curled up with Aerie at Shawn and Juliets feet. Aerie jumped up and gave me a little lick on my nose like she always does.

Shawn said, Good morning, girls. Are you ready for breakfast?

Aerie whispered to me, What a dumb question! We are Labradors. Were always ready to eat.

We got off the plane and someone helped us with our luggage. Once we got out of the airport, our handlers found us the perfect spot to eat and boom-boom (you know, use the bathroom).

Juliet said, Shawn, the security guard told me there is a big shady tree and grass on the right.

Okay, Aerie, right! I think were there. I can feel the cool shade from the tree and the grass.

Shawn got our food bowls and a bottle of water out of his backpack. Aerie and I ate our delicious breakfast in seconds. After we finished taking care of business, Shawn hailed a taxi; we hopped in and were on our way.

In the car, the driver chatted with Shawn and Juliet about their plans. He said, Across the street from the hotel you are staying, there are a lot of museums, monuments, and a tidal basin.

Aerie looked to me and said, I dont know what any of those things are, do you?

Well, I do know that museums have old things from the past. You know, its called our his tory .

Oh yes, our history. Thats right.

Our handlers were still talking to the driver. Shawn seemed to know a lot about this new place. He said, Juliet, did you know that the Space Museum has rocket ships and a moon rock that we can touch.

How interesting! After we get unpacked, that is the first thing I want to do. Juliet smiled.

The car came to an abrupt stop. The driver announced, Were here!

While Juliet and Shawn were getting our bags and paying the driver, I saw the door to the hotel. All I could think was Oh no!

Juliet commanded, Marly, to the door.

Aerie began shifting around nervously. Marly, we cant go through that door. Its spinning, she said.

I know that, Aerie. We learned that in guide school, remember? They are called revolving doors. We can get our paws caught in them and get hurt.

I think I remember. In places where the weather is cold they help to keep the cold out, right?

Thats right.

Look, Marly. The security guard is opening another door for us.

Oh good! That one is safe to use. Its the door people in wheel chairs use.

We all went through the door safely and walked into the hotels lobby.

CHAPTER 2
The Hotel

The lobby was bright, warm, and welcoming with big cushy chairs and marble floors that made a pleasant sound with each step we took. I was looking around at the art on the walls and the people sitting on the cushy chairs when Juliet commanded, Marly, to the counter, to the counter.

I led Juliet to the counter. There was a pretty blonde lady wearing a fancy red uniform standing behind the counter. Her name tag read DIANA, Hotel Clerk . Welcome to Washington DC! Do you folks have a room? she asked.

Shawn answered, Yes, we do. My name is Shawn OConnor.

She said, Oh yes, here you are, on the fifth floor. These are your keys. And I love your dogs! I can see how much they help. They walked you around all of the furniture and right to the counter without letting you bump into anything. How impressive!

Juliet smiled warmly and thanked her for the compliment.

A man brought a cart over to us and piled the suitcases on it. He said, I can show you to your room. Lets go to the elevator.

Juliet said, Marly, elevator.

In the elevator, I bumped Aeries shoulder with my nose. Aerie, I think we are going up. Elevators are weird. I never know if were going up or down.

Aerie said, I dont either, but theyre always fun. I like to just enjoy the ride and let our handlers tell us when its time to get off.
