FOREWORD

T HE HERBAL DRUGSTOREin particular, one medicinal herbchanged my life and my career.

More than 20 years ago, in the late 1970s, I was a young medical writer. At the time, medical writing meant mainstream, high-tech medicine, because in the American news media, that was pretty much all that existed. The alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, yoga, and meditation, were still in their infancy in this country, while herbal medicine was at the dawn of a renaissance after decades of neglect.

I felt open to medical alternatives, thanks in part to my grandmother, who was a big believer in the folk medicine of her native Ukraine. I learned to meditate, and enjoyed it. But professionally, I focused pretty much on mainstream medicine: heart bypass surgery, organ transplantation, and new drugs.

Meanwhile, for vacations, my wife and I headed to the Caribbean, where we fell in love with snorkeling, and in 1981, became certified scuba divers. We adored diving and went on week-long dive trips whenever we could. My wife had no problem on the small boats that ferried us out to the reefs, walls, and shipwrecks, but I became deathly seasick if the water was the least bit choppy. If youve ever been seasick, you know how horrible it can be. If you havent, pray that you never find out.
