Born on the 18th of July 1950 inSurrey, England, Branson struggled in his school and dropped outwhen he was just 16 years of age, which is actually a decision thatlead him to create Virgin Records. His entrepreneurial projectsbegan in the industry of music, and expanded into a few othersectors, which helped make Branson one of the most well-known andrespected billionaires in the world today. Currently, his VirginGroup hold over two hundred companies including Virgin Galactic,which is a space-tourism firm. Branson is also renowned for hisadventurous spirit as well as sporting achievements like crossingthe oceans in a hot air balloon.
Bransons Early Life
Bransons father was Edward James Branson,who served as a barrister, while Eve Branson, his mother was aflight attendant. At his early age, Branson struggled withdyslexia, which created struggles for him in his adolescence. Infact, he nearly failed school when he was 13. Then, he transferredto a boarding school located in Stowe, Buckinghamshire, England.Because he was still struggling, he decided to drop out toestablish Student, which is a youth-culture magazine. This was runby students, for students, and sold eight thousand dollars worthof advertising space when it was first published in 1966. The firstthousand copies were free, covered by the advertising revenue hedmade.
In 1969, Branson was residing in a communityin London, where he was surrounded by the drug scene and Britishmusic. This was during the time that Branson had started amail-order record company, which was called Virgin, to assist himin funding his magazine. His company did well, and made Bransonenough money that he was able to make an expansion to Virgin byadding record shops. Due to the success of his record shops, he wasable to establish a recording studio.
Virgin Records
Mike Oldfield was the very first artist inVirgin Records. He recorded Tubular Bells in 1973 as his singlewith the assistance of Bransons team. The song was a huge hit andstayed on the UK charts for a total of 247 weeks. With the use ofthe success of Oldfield, Branson signed a few aspiring musicalgroups like the Sex Pistols. Other artists, including the RollingStones, Genesis, and Culture Club would follow, which made VirginMusic one of the top 6 record companies across the globe.
Business Expansion
Branson expanded his efforts, but this timehe included the travel company, called Voyager Group in 1980, andin 1984, the airline Virgin Atlantic, and Virgin megastores.However, the success of Branson wasnt always predictable. By 1992,he was suddenly struggling to remain afloat. The company was alsosold later that year to the THORN EMI for $1B.
Branson was also crushed by the loss, andreportedly cried after he signed the contract, yet remainedinterested in business. In 1993, he established Virgin Radio, and afew years later, in 1996, he began a second record company calledV2. V2 today includes artists like Tom Jones and Powder Finger.
The Virgin Group of Branson, now holdsapproximately two hundred companies in more than thirty countriessuch as Australia, the UK, the US, Asia, Europe, South Africa,Canada, and Asia. He has also expanded his businesses to include aluxury game preserve, train company, space-tourism company, andmobile phone company.
Branson is also renowned for his sportingactivities and the most popular is the record-breaking Atlanticcrossing in the Virgin Atlantic Challenger II, in 1986. The firstcrossing was through a hot-air balloon of the Pacific and AtlanticOceans. He was also knighted in 1999 for his entrepreneurialcontributions and was named as one of the worlds most famousbillionaires.
Virgin Galactic
Recently, Branson focused his attention onhis new space tourism company. He partnered with the ScaledComposites to form the Spaceship Company thats currently creatinga suborbital spaceplane. In April 2013, the project created anexceptional leap forward with the test launch of theSpaceShipTwo.
