Introduction
United States has always been pictured as thestrongest country in the world, and that its people are living theAmerican dream. This is the reason why very many other races havethe desire to come to the country and live the same dream. Whilemost of the good things about the country are true, it also has itsshare of the bad things. Among these are crimes perpetuated byordinary people as well as those who are tagged serial killers. Infact, records show that at least three (3) Americans have beennamed in the list with the highest victim number in the world, then19 with more than 15 but less than 30 victims, as well as 117 withmore than 5 but less than 15 victims.
Serial killers are the type of killers thatkill randomly, but at times have special way of committing thecrime which gives the authorities some clue in their search for theright perpetuator. In most cases, the kills are planned anddecisions are made due to turn of events. Most serial killers arealso too slick and witty that they give authorities difficultyputting the pieces of their investigation together. But eventually, these notorious people slip at one time or another, which lead totheir capture. Sometimes, the slip or clue that they leave on theirtrack is due to arrogance. Whichever is the reason that actuallyleads to their capture, the more important thing to the people inthe area is that they are now safe and secure again.
Serial killers, due to the palpable evidencesthat are present, would usually confess their crimes and pleadguilty to avoid life sentence. Some are also promised parole whilethe rest would live the rest of their lives walking around thebarred areas of penitentiary structures. While it is expected thatmany of these serial killers are supposed to be regretful for theirwrongdoings, a lot are in reality not. They are just waitingfor the right time to escape or plead for parole to resume theirmodus operandi. This has been seen in many of the cleverest serialkillers of all times, Americans not excluded.
To help you put a face on these names andgive you a better picture of what they did to be included in thesedreadful lists, this book presents its own comprehensive list ofAmericas worst serial killers. This list will include the mostimportant information on their committed crimes, how they were ableto do all these things, and how they were captured and brought tojustice.
The Worst of America:Serial Killers
Gary Ridgway
To the people who knew Gary Ridgway, the guyis just another ordinary truck painter who have the knack forcreativity. Little did they know that this guy that anyone canmistake for nice handyman or responsible uncle to anyones kid hasa very unusual extra-curricular activity. He has been held liablefor more than 90 killings, earning the infamous moniker, The GreenRiver Killer. Gary Ridgway confessed to have killed only 71 of thealleged victim of The Green River Killer, but was only convicted of49. His targets during his course of killings from 1982 to 2000were women from Seattle who were working then as sex workers, womenwho were under vulnerable conditions, and underage runaways.
His modus operandi was to spot a perfectcandidate for his penchant, single each one out, and then stranglethe woman with his bare hands, although at other times with the useof ligatures. He would then dump the dead body of his victim in theKing Countys overgrown and forested areas. But that is not wherehis operations end. He would get back to them at times and sexuallyabuse those dead bodies to his fulfillment. This is basically howhis almost 2 centuries of operations was until he was linked with 4women murders where his DNA matched. He then entered a plea bargainwith the authorities in exchange of avoidance of death penalty. Hepleaded guilty of 48 murders but confessed to about twice. He isserving a life sentence with no possibility of parole.
Gary Ridgway is remembered by his 3 ex-wivesand numerous girlfriends as one with insatiable sexual appetite. Hewould demand a lot of sex in a day, frequently in public and thewoods. After arrest and conviction, it was discovered that theseplaces are indeed very notable to Ridgway as most of these arewhere the bodies of his victims were buried. Throughout the courseof his marriage life, he got the services of a lot of prostituteseven though he became too religious during his second marriage. Tosome wise men, it is believed that his lust, which started back inhis young age where he fantasized sex with his mother, and hisreligious belief are the reasons for his strange behavior.
Ted Bundy
The mid 70s had witnessed one of the mostcharismatic and good looking American serial killer, Ted Bundy.Over 4 years of killing stint, from 1974 to 1978, Ted Bundy hadbeen held liable for more than one hundred killings in the UnitedStates. His official confession accounted for at least 30homicides, but this is not the only confession he had made. Infact, he had confessed too many times to different number of crimeswhich made him possibly the biggest offender in the country. Amongthese confessions, 35 to 36 women were killed, with some abductedwithin hours from one another and in the same location.
In all of these confessions, Ted Bundy hadbeen jailed thrice and escaped twice. During these escapes, he hadalso killed a number of victims, sometimes in the same day. On thelast capture and jail time he served, he was executed in anelectric chair in 1989. This ended the terror women faced in thecountry.
While Ted Bundy was clearly the most prolificserial killer of all times in America, records show that he wasonly accountable for 30 of these homicides. This makes him thesecond in the history of serial killers in the country, with GaryRidgway with 49 at the top. Still, he was the one with the mostsensational stories written by human rights protesters and filmmoguls. One of the things that makes people doubt his innocenceeven when he did already confess to these crimes is his charminggood looks. On suit, people would not believe that a guy of goodstature and looks would really behave ill. In reality though,Theodore Robert Bundy, whose real name is Theodore Robert Cowell, was a lot of things: necrophile, kidnapper, serial killer, andrapist.
Profilers have noticed that most of hisvictims resembled his first girlfriend, Stephanie Brooks, whorejected Bundy. But Bundy maintained his claim that his victimswere chosen as attractive and young. But this was tainted by hisreconnection with Brooks, courting her again and to the point ofreaching engagement. He even took her to Seattle where he workedfor the Republican Chairman, Ross Davis as assistant and evenintroduced her as his fianc. Abruptly though, he stopped takingher calls and succeeded in evading her. When he finally did tookher call, he rejected Brooks. Over that course of relationship, hewas also dating Elizabeth Kloepfer whom he later distanced himselffrom when his sickness - his killer instinct started to take overhim.
Ted Bundy, who was born Cowell to an unwedmom who also do not know the real father of his son, had a fairlygood youth. His classmates would describe him as well-liked andfriendly person in the campus. But to Bundy, he did not know whatfriendship is. He also confessed to her girlfriend that hediscovered he was not a younger brother of his mom through hiscousin who called him bastard and consequently showed him his birthcertificate. He was also known to have told her that he was angrywith her mother who abruptly changed her surname to Nelson and leftto live with her relatives in Washington where she met his husband,Johnny Bundy. While Johnny formally adopted Ted and made it a pointto include Ted in family trips and activities, Ted remained strangeand later complained of him to his mother as not making enoughmoney and not so bright.
