INTRODUCTION

Its difficult not to be fascinated by the horrific acts of evil carried out by some of the worlds most terrifying people.

We wonder what inspires such villainy, and shiver at the idea of living with a serial killer in our midst.

For some killing is the ultimate display of power. You feel the last bit of breath leaving their body. Youre looking into their eyes. A person in that situation is God, said John Wayne Gacy, who killed 33 young men and boys, burying many of them in the crawlspace of his Illinois home. For others, killing is the only way for monsters to cover their diabolical tracks.

While horror movies often use true-life tales as their inspiration, in reality, truth really is stranger than fiction, as these 101 terrifying bits of trivia reveal.

Youll learn about famous last meals, famous last words and twisted acts of depravity that will keep you awake at night, long after youve turned the last page.

This is the stuff of nightmares, and its the most terrifying because its true.

Part One
  1. Robert K. Ressler, a former FBI Special Agent, is the man credited with coining the term serial killer in 1971.
  2. In the midst of his murder spree , Rodney Alcala won The Dating Game TV show, although his date chose not to go out with him. Alcala was sentenced to death in California in 2010 for five murders committed between 1977 and 1979.
  3. After his conviction, axe murderer Jake Bird said, Im putting the Jake Bird hex on all of you who had anything to do with my being punished. Mark my words you will die before I do. Allegedly, six people connected with the trial actually did perish.
  4. Serial Killer Ted Bundy helped detectives by giving his perspective as a serial killer to help capture Gary Ridgeway, better known as the Green River Killer.
  5. After he was killed by a fellow inmate, Jeffrey Dahmer was cremated. His brain, however, was initially held at his mothers request. She was hoping to determine what factors might have led to Dahmer killing 17 young men. A judge later ordered his brain cremated as well at the request of Dahmers father, Lionel.
  6. David Parker Ray, the Toy-Box Killer, was a serial killer in US that had a $100,000 homemade torture chamber in his old mobile home. Much like the movie Saw, he tape recorded himself talking to his victims, explaining in horrifying detail what was going to happen to them.
  7. The Night Stalker Richard Ramirez raped and tortured more than 25 victims, and killed 13 of them. On November 7, 1989, Ramirez received 19 death sentences, to which he responded, "No big deal. Death always comes with the territory. I'll see you in Disneyland.
  8. The classic Alfred Hitchcock movie Psycho was based on the life of Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein, who killed two women and robbed graves of countless others in order to collect body parts, mostly vulvas and nipples. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs were also based on his macabre story.
  9. Like many serial killers, Milwaukee serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer has a fascination with animals. He would walk the streets near his childhood home with a trash bag in order to collect road kill, which he brought home and dissected, disposing of the remains in the woods behind the family home.
  10. Serial killers often keep trophies from their crimes, including locks of hair, drivers licenses and other mementos. Ted Bundy took Polaroid photos of his victims. When you work hard to do something, you dont want to forget it, he said.
  11. The majority of the worlds serial killers a whopping 76 percent come from the United States.
  12. John Wayne Gacy, who murdered 33 boys and young men, burying many of them in his crawlspace, was the local precinct captain of the Democratic Party. Because he lived outside of Chicago, many famous Dems passed through, including First Lady Rosalynn Carter, who was once photographed shaking Gacys hand.
  13. While many serial killers masquerade as police officers in order to catch their victims off guard, Kenneth Bianchi who along with partner Angel Buono raped and murdered 10 women as the Hillside Stranglers applied for a job with the Los Angeles Police Department, and was included in a few ride alongs.
  14. Serial killer Rodney Alcala represented himself at trial, and during questioning morphed into two people. He interrogated himself for five hours on the stand, using a deep voice and calling himself Mr. Alcala, then answering in his normal voice. After being sentenced to death in California, he received another 25-year sentence in New York for killing two women.
  15. Canadian pig farmer Robert Pickton confessed to killing 49 women. He disposed of their bodies in two ways, either by feeding them to his pigs or by grinding them up with pork from his farm and selling them as sausage to the public.
  16. While many serial killers, including BTK killer Dennis Rader, sent letters to police to bring publicity to themselves, they dont often turn themselves in. After killing his mother, Edmund Kemper called the police to confess. He waited near a telephone booth for police to arrive.
  17. Edmund Kemper, known as the Co-Ed Killer, had an IQ of 145, which is considered to be in genius range. FBI profiler John E. Douglas called Kemper among the brightest prison inmates he'd ever interviewed.
  18. Edmund Kemper had wanted to become a state trooper, but he was rejected due to his size. (He stood 6-foot-9inches (2.06m) tall and weighed 300 pounds.) He instead hung out at the popular police hangout The Jury Room, chatting about his own crimes.
  19. Edmund Kemper was incarcerated at California Medical Facility, and was housed on the same block as Charles Manson.
  20. The American thrash metal band Macabre ensured that Edmund Kemper will never be forgotten with their song Edmund Kemper Had a Horrible Temper, from the album Sinister Slaughter.

Edmund Kemper is an interesting serial killer, definitely one of my favorites. I wrote a book about him, check it out!

American serial killer Edmund Kemper III stalked co-eds in California at the - photo 2

American serial killer Edmund Kemper III stalked co-eds in California at the height of the era of peace and free love, dismembering his victims and tossing their body parts in remote areas around Santa Cruz .
As pieces of young women began washing up on shore and turning up alongside rural highways, female residents especially college students were decidedly on edge .
A lust killer who savored the act of decapitating his victims - and often used their severed heads for sexual pleasure - Kempers story is particularly twisted among historical serial killers .
Still, the true crime tale of Edmund Kemper is particularly fascinating, because the man many people called a gentle giant was a near genius whose cunning manipulation of others made him particularly depraved and dangerous .
This true crime story, a detailed biography of one of the most psychopathic serial killers of our time, shares some insight into the troubled childhood and awkward nature that led the American serial killer to take 10 lives, including those of six pretty co-eds, his paternal grandparents, his calculatingly cruel mother and his mothers best friend .
