A Helpful Word to the Student
As you are aware, the purpose of this book is to help you review for the New York State Regents examination in ChemistryPhysical Setting. You can also use it effectively to prepare for classroom, midterm, and final examinations. The book contains a number of special sections and other features designed to aid you in achieving good grades on your examinations. Included are the following:
- How to Use This Book. Your journey begins here. This section explains how to use the entire book as an effective test-preparation tool. It provides a method of identifying those areas you have mastered and those that will require additional work.
- Test-Taking Techniques. In this section, you will learn how to take the Regents examination effectively. Included are a list of materials you will need to bring to the examination and directions on how to fill out your answer sheet, how to read the questions, and how to deal with difficult items. In addition, it provides some suggestions on how to approach the extended-response questions found on Part C of the examination.
- What to Expect on the Chemistry Examination. This section explains the format, content, and grading of the examination.
- New York State Physical Setting/Chemistry Core: Topic Outline and Question Index. The topic outline provides a detailed description of the Regents Physical Setting/Chemistry Core, and the question index keys the Regents examination questions that appear in this book to the topic outline. The index will help you find questions on similar topics and will provide information about the areas that are stressed most heavily on the exam.
- Glossary of Important Terms. The glossary will help you understand the technical terms that may appear on the examination.
- Reference Tables for Chemistry. A significant part of the Regents examination requires you to be able to find and use the information contained in these reference tables. This section describes each table and the types of information that may be obtained from it.
- Recent Regents Examinations. These questions will provide the bulk of your study and review. When you have answered all of the questions that appear in this book, you will be able to approach the Regents examination with confidence!
- Explanation of Answers and Self-Analysis Chart for Each Examination. The detailed answer explanations will help you to understand why certain choices are correct, and others are incorrect. The self-analysis chart will pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses on each practice examination you take.
This book was written to provide you with the basic tools you need to perform well on the Regents ChemistryPhysical Setting examination. If you follow its advice and prepare diligently, you will achieve your goal. Best wishes for success!

How to Use This Book
- Read the section entitled Test-Taking Techniques to learn how to prepare properly for an examination and how to take it with maximum efficiency.
- Read the section entitled What to Expect on the Chemistry Examination to familiarize yourself with the structure and contents of this examination.
- Read the section entitled Reference Tables for Chemistry to familiarize yourself with the contents and use of these tables.
Note: On occasion, the New York State Education Department may change the content or format of the Regents examination and/or the reference tables. Your classroom teacher is your best source of information about such changes. - Read the section entitled Using the Equations to Solve Chemistry Problems.
- Refer to the Glossary of Important Terms to learn the meanings of words and terms you do not understand.
- Take the first Regents examination in this book, answering all of the questions.
- Check your answers, and then complete the self-analysis chart
at the end of the examination to pinpoint your strengths and
weaknesses. - Read the detailed explanation of all of the questions, paying closest attention to the questions you answered incorrectly. Occasionally, the wrong choices are explained, and these explanations may help you understand why you chose an incorrect answer.
- When you have determined your areas of weakness, refer to the New York State Physical Setting/Chemistry Core: Topic Outline and Question Index to locate similar questions on other recent examinations. (You can also use this outline and index to determine which areas have been stressed in recent years.)
- Repeat steps 69 for the other examinations, with the exception of the most recent test.
- When you have completed your studying, but no more than 1 or 2 days before the actual examination, take the most recent examination in this book under strict examination conditions.
After you have checked your answers to this last examination, you will have a rough idea of how you will perform on the Regents examination you will take.

Be confident and prepared.
SUGGESTIONS
- Review previous tests.
- Use a clock or watch and take the most recent exam at home under examination conditions (i.e., dont have the radio or television on).
- Get a review book. (One useful book is Barrons Lets Review Regents: ChemistryPhysical Setting.)
- Talk over the answers to questions on these tests with someone else, such as another student in your class or someone at home.
- Finish all your homework assignments.
- Look over classroom exams that your teacher gave during the term.
- Take class notes carefully.
- Practice good study habits.
- Know that there are answers for every question.
- Be aware that the people who made up the Regents examination want you to succeed.
- Remember that thousands of students over the last few years have taken and passed a Chemistry Regents. You can pass too!
